Skywarn --  trained volunteer spotters for the National Weather Service. Some volunteers are also known as "chasers", who get in the vehicle to track storms, but it is not encouraged by the National Weather Service.

Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services. --  Founded in 1952, the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) is a public service provided by a reserve (volunteer) communications group within government agencies in times of extraordinary need. During periods of RACES activation, certified unpaid personnel are called upon to perform many tasks for the government agencies they serve. Although the exact nature of each activation will be different, the common thread is communications.

eQSL The purpose of eQSL.cc is to provide an electronic QSL card exchange for amateur radio operators and SWLs around the world.  While not yet recognized for major awards, the site provides an opportunity to exchange QSL cards electonically.  No more stamps, no more QSL managers, etc.  Take a look.
