2004 Field Day at Ensor Museum
The June 26, 27, Field Day at the Ensor Museum was as usual, a get away from normal and boring weekends. The weather in eastern Kansas was cool and beautiful for June and all started well and the efficient club members of the Santa Fe Trail amateur radio club went about the duties of set up without flaw. The multitude of trees at Ensor gave way to easy antenna hanging for the wire type. The verticals went up easy too.
About an hour into the event disaster struck. Long time member and senior mentor, Dan Reed NØZIZ miss stepped a stair and toppled in a heap and with a ‘thud’ on the sidewalk causing a fractured hip joint. Those nearby heard not an ouch or groan from Dan. We had to ask him to stay down while checking his composure, which was not faulty. He had no visible injury, so we lifted him to a chair seat to rest and dialed 911 after he failed to want any weight on the right leg and winced with pain in an attempt. He was carted off soon to the Olathe Hospital by emergency workers and we later learned his hip joint was cracked and the socket somewhat mangled. The Dr. came out of the operating room and gave family and friends the word that all went well and his expected convalescence was underway.
Other than that sad happening as well as an early Sunday morning steady rain, and loss of the usually all night operator, Dan Reed, NØZIZ, all went merely fair. The fun of the get together at the Ensor Museum event however, was a blast as usual ..almost.
