Club meeting
The April meeting of the AARC will be held in Building 212, Room A157. The date will be the 8th of the month and the time will be 12 o’clock noon. The topic for the meeting is unknown at this time but will be announced.

HAMS AID MARITIME RESCUE
Amateur Radio operators on a 40-meter net that’s aimed at helping stations obtain the Worked All States award are getting at least partial credit for helping to save a ham-sailor and two companions whose boat was caught up in rough weather off the West Coast December 14. Steve Letendre, KE6FQ, said that during a late 40-meter session of the 3905 Century Club Net – http://www.3905ccn.com on 7.233.5 MHz – an emergency break came on frequency.

“The man’s boat was in high seas and taking water approximately 350 miles south of San Diego near Cedros Island,” Letendre said. “High winds and waves mostly kept him from spending too much time giving us info.”

Letendre says he later learned from the Coast Guard that the boat was being exposed to 12-15 foot waves and 60 MPH winds.

Net Control Station John Milner, W6BUM, requested a hold on the net while Letendre and Joe Seibert, AL1F, in Alaska attempted to communicate with the vessel’s skipper – whom Letendre identified as Walter Jorgenson, W6ULT.

“I was on the phone with San Diego Coast Guard, while Joe copied info as the questions came from them,” Letendre said. “We were unable to get too much other info due to the boat getting slapped around pretty good. I’m sure the skipper had his hands full holding the wheel and a mic at the same time.”

Somewhere in the excitement, Letendre said, the skipper fired a flare and a Mexican Naval vessel appeared and launched a raft. The passengers were taken aboard the naval vessel and the boat towed to safety. Letendre is modest about his net’s role in the effort. “By the time we had good relays set up, he was rescued,” he said.

The incident did provide an opportunity for Letendre to acquaint the US Coast Guard in his area with the net’s existence. “The Coast Guard officer also thanked us and requested info on our group, so I gave him the home page,” he explained. kind of propagation.”

SUMMITS ON THE AIR (SOTA) ENCOURAGES PORTABLE HILLTOP OPERATION:
Richard Newstead, G3CWI, is encouraging participation by US amateurs in the Summits on the Air (SOTA) program, which promotes portable, hilltop operation. “It started about a year ago, and, so far, seven countries have schemes running,” Newstead told ARRL. “The scheme is based on a core set of rules, and each country adds its list of summits to enable it to participate.” Newstead says the list of summits need not be comprehensive but must include a mix of easy and difficult peaks. He says there are awards for both activators and chasers. Details are available on the SOTA Web site http://www.sota.org.uk or by contacting SOTA General Manager John Linford, G3WGV, g3wgv@aol.com.

Editorial

The number of sunspots is steadily going down but that doesn’t stop the action on our higher HF bands. It might make it more intense due to people wanting to make the contacts when the bands are open but fun none the less. It also means that the lower bands will get a little quieter and more used as well.

With spring and then summer coming on the E skip will be starting to show up on ten and six meters. Very fun to work a ways away and only use a little power and or antenna. I personally am looking forward to it as I have just raised the cash to purchase a new “wonder rig”, Yaesu FT817. I never thought that I would hold a rig that would do so many modes on so many bands and only be the size of a large handy talky. I have been very pleased with it so far as my first contacts with it were into the Caribbean and northern South America while only using 5 watts and a small portable antenna.

I believe that all of you will go along with me when I wish all of our armed forces the best. Come back to us and no stars in the window.

Board Meeting Minutes

Attendees:
  Bruce Epperson (KA9H), President,
  Chuck Doose (KB9UMF), Vice-President,
  Joe Kilar (WB9THV), Secretary,
  Dale Travis (AG9H), Treasurer,
  Jim Jorgensen (K9RJ), Director,
  Loren Thompson (KB9CTJ), Director.

Bruce reported that the S-COM repeater controller we talked about last month would meet our needs. It is expected to be available to us soon.

Bruce also reported that the donated Motorola power amplifier we received works fine.

We talked about the possible repeater site in Bldg. 203. Loren stated that we will not be permitted to run a cable in the elevator shaft. We will have to find an alternative route or use a wireless link. There is some concern about the temperature swings in this location. Bruce indicated that we could use fans to help cool the equipment during the summer. Since Loren is the care-taker for this area, we discussed the possibility that we might be able to use a portion of it as an HF ham shack.

Jim suggested that we inform the proper people in the Lab about our communications capabilities in the event of emergencies and in line with Homeland Security.  5+2  2+1

Software Upgrade

Dear Tech Support:

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a slow down in the overall performance, particularly in the flower and jewelry applications that had operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0. In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, but installed undesirable programs such as NFL 5.0 and NBA 3.0. and now Conversation 8.0 no longer runs and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. I’ve tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do?

Desperate.

Dear Desperate:

First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an entertainment package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system. Try to enter the command: C:/I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME and download Tears 6.2 to install Guilt 3.0. If all works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. But remember, overuse can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0, or Beer 6.1. Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will create Snoring Loudly. WAV files. Whatever you do, DO NOT install Mother-in-law 1.0 or reinstall another Boyfriend program.

These are not supported applications and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have a limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. I personally recommend Hot Food 3.0 and Lingerie 7.7.

Good Luck,
Tech! Support.
