CQ CQ CQ to the CIRC
With the November meeting fast approaching that could only mean one thing, we are looking at a new year and the election of Club Officers. A slate of officers was presented at the October meeting, with nomination taken from the floor this month. Work of the club does not stop with the officers, it takes involvement by all club members, relative to programs, presentations, club activities (Jingle Bell Run), field day and other items that promote Amateur Radio Awareness. I urge everyone to make it a point in the coming new year to become actively involved in some manner with the CIRC. Also with the new year approaching, I'm sure our Treasurer will be happy to collect dues for 2003, get yours in early.
The agenda for this meeting, will include elections, report from sub committees ( Jingle Bell Run / Red Cross ) and other information to be shared.
The December meeting will focus on our annual CIRC Holiday Dinner, being held December 5, 6:30 at Ned Kelly's, just off Rt. 150 and Veterans Parkway. We have reserved the far back south/east corner for our group. In the past we've had a great attendance, come early and enjoy the company of friends and family. The dinner will include a brief program/presentation.
Our next scheduled meeting would have been December 25, guessing that most will be very busy with family activities on Christmas Day, our next meeting date will be January 22, 2003. Program for that evening will be a swap meet. Plan now to bring your items to exchange, sale, trade or whatever works best for you.

RESEARCH NEWS
For several years, researchers have been seeking to replace
a key material used in rechargeable batteries. The material, a compound
of lithium, cobalt, and oxygen, generally works well but is expensive and
has safety factors that limit the size of the battery that can be made
with it.
In 1997, a team at the University of Texas at Austin identified a potential replacement, lithium iron phosphate, which was cheap, environmentally friendly, and safe. However, its low electronic conductivity kept it from being practical.
MIT researchers recently overcame this obstacle by spiking the original material with tiny amounts of metal and processing it under special conditions, effectively boosting its electronic conductivity by eight orders of magnitude.

TECHNOLOGY OF THE WEEK
Honeywell's automobile battery power management system
monitors battery status and engine conditions, and controls the alternator
to selectively charge the battery. Unlike conventional systems, which typically
provide electrical energy to the vehicle and battery indiscriminately,
this one monitors specific battery and engine operating conditions.
By utilizing a "surplus energy" approach, the device ensures optimum operating characteristics of the battery -- allowing a reduction in fuel consumption. The system provides for original equipment or aftermarket installation in all types of vehicles and charging systems.
