Christmas Donations

Just a few lines to let you wonderful people know that your generosity at Christmas time was greatly appreciated. We got a letter from the chairperson of the Foodbasket & Toy Committee and they were overwhelmed by your gifts.

There were 115 baskets delivered this year and in every family that had children, those children each received a gift. Seeing the look on those little faces was worth all the effort.

We started at about 8:30AM, we being Jan, KB8YSB, Carol, N8SIN, Gary, N8OGK, and myself, KC8DER. We helped put food in the bags, helped sort out the different staples. After they were all assembled, we got the toys for the proper baskets, then took off in our sleigh. What a joy to see the families reactions when they saw all that food coming into their homes that they would not have otherwise had.

YOU MADE IT POSSIBLE! There were 47 toys and $61 in cash that you donated.

Thank you so much!

KC8DER & N8OGK

Goodyear/SARA/Pioneer Hamfest 1998

The following was received by e-mail from Ken Phillips, Chairman of the 1998 Goodyear Hamfest.

This event is a being shared by Goodyear, Pioneer and SARA. We are to provide workers for the Hamfest and share equally in the profits.

Each worker will receive additional tickets for the drawing for the grand prize at the Hamfest. No shift requires more than two hours work. We will need all the help we can get from our membership because this could mean a big boost for our treasury.

Joe Bartzi, KC8DKF

How many Hams does it take to screw up a Hamfest?

The above would make a good story but let us look at the real problem of how many does it take to make a Hamfest operate like the average Hamfest attendee would like it to operate.

The Hamfest must open on time, tickets sold efficiently, cars parked, flea market set up, and finally the cleanup.

First, at the entrance gate, which opens at 8:00 AM, we need at least 6 people selling tickets. Basically most of the people will enter during the first 2 hours. Then we must continue to man the gate for another 2 hours until 12:00,Noon.

The coordinator of this group will dispense tickets to the sellers, collect money as it accumulates, and dispense smaller bills as needed.

The second largest job is the Flea market. Here again the greatest activity here will be in the first 2 hours as the 'vendors' get setup. We need 10 people here for 2 hours.

Parking non-vendors will continue until approximately noon. Again the largest influx will be from 8 to 10 PM. 6 people from 8 to 10 and three from 10 to 12.

People will be required to maintain a 'headquarters' but this will be the easiest to get.

The Tower

The scene opens upon an amateur radio operator sitting at his desk contemplating how he should answer a letter from his insurance company.

Eventually, this is his reply...

I am writing in response to your request for additional information in block number (3) of the Accident Report Form. I put "poor planning" as the cause of my accident. You said in your letter that I should explain more fully, and I trust that the following details will be sufficient.

I am an amateur radio operator. On the day of the accident I was working alone on the top section of my new 80 foot tower. When I had completed my work, I discovered that I had brought, over the course of several trips up the tower, about 300 pounds of tools and spare hardware to the top. Rather than carry the now unneeded tools and material down by hand, I decided to lower the materials down in a small barrel by using a pulley which fortunately was fastened to the gin pole at the top of the tower.

Securing the rope at ground level, I went to the top of the tower and loaded the tools and materials into the barrel. Then I went back to the ground level and untied the rope, holding tightly to ensure a slow descent of the 300 pounds of tools. You will note that in block (11) of the Accident Report Form that I only weigh 150 pounds. Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I proceeded at a rather rapid rate of speed up the side of the tower. In the vicinity of the 40 foot level, I met the barrel coming down. This explains my fractured skull and broken collar bone. Slowed only slightly, I continued my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of my right hand were two knuckles deep into the pulley.

Fortunately by this time, I had regained my presence of mind and was able to hold onto the rope in spite of my pain. At approximately the same time, however, the barrel of tools hit the ground and the bottom fell out of the barrel.

Devoid of the weight of the tools, the barrel now weighed approximately 30 pounds. I refer you again to my weight in block number (11). As you might imagine, I began a rapid descent down the side of the tower. In the vicinity of the 40 foot level, I met the barrel coming up. This accounts for the two broken ankles and lacerations of my legs and lower body.

The encounter with the barrel slowed me enough to lessen my injuries when I fell onto the pile of tools and, fortunately, only three vertebrae were cracked.

I am sorry to report, however, that as I lay there on the pile of tools in pain and unable to stand, watching the empty barrel 80 feet above me, I again lost my presence of mind... and let go of the rope.
