Welcome to my own little corner
on the web. Mind the dust *ahem*. My name is William Doty W8WDD, and
I am an Amateur Radio Operator. No, that does not mean I just picked
up a Citizen Band (CB) radio last week and finally got around to
hooking it up in my car.
I am just a small member of a
large community of enthusiasts who have been united by a common
hobby that was originally started to assist in times of need (i.e.
disaster, or any situation that threatens damage to property or
human life). Individually licensed by each country's
Government, Ham Radio operators are out there making contacts and
providing assistance in areas such as disaster relief, emergency and
priority traffic (also known as radiograms), and other services. If
you're ever in an emergency, "just ask one of our friendly
operators, and we'll be happy to assist you." Although we may speak
different languages, Hams all around the world work together for a
common goal.
Licensed back in 2003, I've been
operating in the small berg of Orleans, Mi (my QTH), mainly on the
VHF and UHF frequencies (locally reaching). Once in awhile you may
hear me as far as Elkhart, In. (thank you for all those who have
helped me with DX QSO's on 2 Meter), but just recently I upgraded
my license to General class which allows me to speak with Hams all
over the world.
I now am becoming an active
member in our county's local Emergency Service groups such as RACES
(Radio Amateur Civilian Emergency Service), ARES (Amateur Radio
Emergency Services), Skywarn (Network of trained Weather Spotters),
CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), and of course the Red Cross.
At the top you will find links to
several of these groups, and if you're interested in making contact
with me (a QSO), you can email me at [email protected] or of course if you're
licensed, grab a mic and start howlin on the radio for me. For more
information, you can look me up on www.qrz.com and punch in my station
call W8WDD. 73's, DE W8WDD
