Field Day 1999

The 1999 Field Day will be held on June 26 and 27th. The location will be Jim Weit KI8BV’s property, behind his house. The site is located on route 101 just East of the State Route 2 exit. The drive way is on the South side of the road and about 500’ West of the entrance of Screen Printing Unlimited. Hopefully we will have signs and arrows to point you in the right direction. The event officially starts at 2:00 P.M. local and lasts for a 27 hour period. The club will only operate for a 24 hour period as permitted by the rules, because we setup before Saturday. Only stations setting up after 2:00 P.M. local are permitted to work the full 27 hours.

This year we will be changing the menu a little. On Saturday night we will have a fish fry instead of our normal roast beef. Not to worry though we will still have our roast beef and ham through out the day but the amounts will be reduced because of the fish. Jim Weit KI8BV is donating the fish. If you have any fish that is getting old in the freezer we could use them too. So when you come out to Field Day please bring your fish and of course your bag of ICE.

Setup for Field Day will be Thursday June 24th at 7:00 P.M. Overnight camping is permitted and will be allowed earlier than Saturday. Many members are planning on staying Thursday night after the tent raising. Mark you calendars and plan to attend!

60th Anniversary!!!!!

Two club members are celebrating 60 years in Amateur radio! Jim Barnhart W8UQF and John Schemmer W8VPY were both licensed in 1939 within a few months of each other. Congratulations to both of you.

Weather alert Receiver!

The club membership agreed to purchase a Radio Shack S.A.M.E. weather receiver. This receiver has the added advantage of being able to hear an alert for a specific area. S.A.M.E. stands for, Specific Area Message Encoding. The club is able to enter up to 15 counties into the receiver. When the National Weather Service in Cleveland issues an alert, an alarm will sound only for those programmed counties. Currently we have Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca, Erie and Lorain counties. The unit will be interfaced to the repeaters and this will notify all listeners of the repeater to tune to 162.400 for further information.

Bike Ride

On July 23rd through 25th the 146.655 repeater will be used for routine communications for the American Lung Association Big Ride Across America. This ride starts in Seattle, WA and ends in Washington, DC 6 1/2 weeks later. The total trip will take the riders on a 3,250 mile route. When the riders arrive from Fremont they will rest in Sandusky before continuing on to Cleveland.

New Member? Sort of!

Scott Salyers N8MQB has reactivated his membership in the club. If you do not know Scott please introduce your self when you are at the meeting.

New Historian Named

The club has voted to add an Ex-Officio office to the yearly elections. For those who have not viewed the scrap book lately it is in poor condition. There is definitely an immediate need for a Historian. A motion was made by Tom Troike WA8VOE to add this position. Tom also nominated Jim Dean to be the first historian. Without any problems Jim graciously accepted. If you have information or helpful input on the history of the club or its members please forward such to Jim Dean WB8SIO.

U.S. Islands on the Air

The club will once again participate in the US Islands on the Air. We will be operating from Middle Bass Island on September 25th and 26th. Denny McMannon has made arrangements for us to setup in a field on this island. Jim Weit KI8BV has once again volunteered to take care of the publicity and registration for this special event station. We will be operating on 20 and 40 meters.

As more information becomes available we will notify the members. For additional information on US Island on the Air check out the web site at: http://www.eng.mu.edu/~usi/

Burn you own CD?

The price of CD-ROM burners has finally came down to a price the average person can afford. The club voted on a motion to purchase a writeable CD-ROM drive. This drive will be added in addition to the current CD-ROM. The main reason for purchasing the CD-ROM burner was to allow the Historian to scan in pictures in the scrape book and save them to a CD-ROM. Some of these pictures will also be added to the club’s web page.

By-Law Change

The membership approved a by-law change to allow persons under the age of 21 to join the club. The new by-laws will allow persons having interested in Amateur radio to join the radio club if they are from the age or 18-21.

These persons will not have 24 hour access to the club and their voting rights are different. Also their dues are 25% of the current yearly dues. This comes out to be 32.50 based on the current membership rate.

If you are aware of someone that is between these ages and would like to join the club bring them with you the next time you can.

PSK 31 What….

Just what is this PSK 31 everyone is talking about. Well to find out more come to the July 1st meeting! Bob Cerreto WA1FXT has arranged for Bill Ruth KB8USZ. To give a demonstration on this very new mode of communications. He will be at the club around 8:00 P.M.

If you have interest in digital type communications, such as packet you will want to attend. This mode uses nothing more than a personal computer equipped with a Sound Blaster and a program designed to run in Windows. For more information check out the PSK 31 web page at;

No Longer Single….

As a personal note I would like to announce my marriage on May 29, 1999 to Susan Canfield KC8FDF.

Susan and I have been together for about 4 years now and I’m sure most of you know or have already met her. If you haven’t, take a moment to introduce yourself at field day where she’ll be helping keep me organized.
