Biographical Information

My fascination with amateur radio grew from hearing BCI on my grandfather's
A.M. radio as a child of seven. BCI for the uninforned is Broadcast Interference. The culprit was the neighborhood

curmudgeon Charlie Floyd W8WJ. From that point on, I was hooked. I was first licensed as WN8EHJ and my

station consisted of a Heathkit DX-20 transmitter and a Hallicrafters S-38 receiver. The antenna was some attempt

at a dipole but my upstairs bedroom didn't allow for equal legs. It did get out thought and it was very thrilling

to first hear my call coming back to me. In those days, Novices operated 75watts cw and we were crystal controlled.

After about 10 months as a Novice, I took my General test at the FCC station in Pittsburgh and passed on the

second try. (Trips to Pittsburgh were expensive for a teenager). I became WA8EHJ and spent my hard earned paper

route money on a Heathkit HG-10 vfo. Soon thereafter I picked up a Heathkit DX-40 which allowed for am operations

I am a member of the Salem Area Amateur Radio Association http://www.qsl.net/saara/
