I hope all is well with the "OLD" group. Just thought I would let you know that I have changed my call. Please drop me a line and let me know how you are all doing. Major changes here at the "NEW" phone company. In fact, things are changing on a daily basis. As far as amateur radio goes, I still play around with QRP and I am thinking about getting back on 2 meters. I still think about you all ( Bob,Curt, Dave, Steve ) and know that Curt recently has had to deal with some difficult family situations. The loss of a loved one can be very hard thing o go through. I have put a few sites up on the internet. They are: K8CTT http://ka8egs.home.att.net USS Oxford AGTR-1 - On Station - Vietnam 1969 http://ka8egs.home.att.net/ox/oxford.htm NSGA Todendorf - 1968 http://ka8egs.home.att.net/tod/toden.htm Rick's Radio Links http://rekerr.home.att.net Please stay in touch! Hi, I want to say how glad I am that I got my licence and joined your club. I started studying because it was something George was interested in; I didn't know anything about electronics. Then we began taking the practice tests on qrz and it was fun (a little obsessive too, te-he). As we gained knowledge the guessing turned into 'I know that one', and we became profficient in different areas. If we could have shared a test we would have gotten 100%. What a rush it was to get the thumbs up after our tests were graded at the test site. The benefits of getting my Ham licence are showing up in different areas. I have the confidence to try something I never thought I could do. I've always felt so awkward and clumsy on the dance floor that I avoided as much as I could, and envied those that could dance. So now I'm learning to line dance, and I almost feel graceful doing some of the waltz steps they taught us. I don't think I would have ever tried that if I hadn't worked for and received my licence. I'm also studying Morse Code. To everyone that thinks it's hard to learn because you heard others say it is, or because you tried it a couple of times and gave up, it's not! A couple of weeks ago I was about to slog through it and get the other half of the alphabet down because the test is coming soon, when I picked up my ARRL New Ham Companion magazine and read a 1 page article titled "You CAN Copy 30 wpm." It talked about copying behind and gave tips like--relax, write slowly in longhand--it also said that at 20 wpm there's plenty of time to get it down (what?). It sparked my interest and I tried it. It's too tedious trying to copy behind at 5wpm, but it took all the pressure off trying to keep up. All of a sudden the spaces between charactors became so long that 5wpm felt slow even with less than half the charactors down. I wanted to learn more about cw. I searched the net and was so disappointed at how little there is written about it until I found a message board that linked to fists and learned some more interesting things. Their links page had a link for a book--"The Art and Skill of Radio-Talegraphy", by Bill Pierpont. That book is so fascinating. I learned quite a few study tips and the history of Morse Code. I learned that you're not limited to copying code on paper, you can just listen and after a while you can think in code so that it's just like another language. I also read that old-time ship telegraphers could copy 100% from distant stations through all kinds of static. This book has given me a whole new approach to learning the code. I'm copying easily at 5wpm though some of the new (to me) and more complicated charactors are a challenge; its not a worry. I also listen to code at higher speeds. I can pick out short words at 13wpm and can pick out letters at 15wpm. I started taking my cassette player to work so I can learn to listen to code with distractions all around; it's noisy there, the machines clackity-clack all the time and the air pressure makes a constant noise that you don't notice until it's gone. I can hardly wait til I can copy fast, then listen and understand. Learning Morse Code is NOT hard. It takes effort and time, and your attitude is everything. "The Art and Skill....." talks extensively about attitude in the first few chapters. Thanks for holding your Saturday morning breakfasts that led us to your club. It's also brought George and I closer. Jeannie KC8OFF
