- WEST WHITE PINE LOOKOUT RESTORATION AND INTERPRETIVE
PROJECT
- The Amateur Radio Forest Fire Lookout Tower Assocition in
cooperation with the Colorado State
University-Environmental Learning Center are developing plans to rehabilitate the West
White Pine Lookout Tower cab. The Environmental Learning Center provides a unique setting
in which to preserve and educate the public about the nations lookout towers heritage and
amateur radio fire line communication development history. The project will be funded and
completed through grants and volunteer programs through Colorado State University, United
States Forest Service, Amateur Radio Forest Fire Lookout Tower Association and the Forest
Fire Lookout Tower Association. We are currently working on obtaining grants for materials
through HOME DEPOT, and Youth at Risk Programs for the rehabilitation work force. Graduate
students are being recruited to research the history of Forest Fire Lookout Towers along
the Colorado and Wyoming Front Range and to provide a historical intrepretive program at
the Envirnomental Learning Center lookout location.
