In order to become an FCC Licensed Radio Amateur Operator, and get on the air, you must pass a written exam. The entry level exam is The Technician and cotains 35 multiple choce questions that cover basic regulations, operating practices and basic electronic theory focusing on VHF and UHF applications. You must answer at least 26 questions correectly to pass.

There are license manuals published by various individuals which contain the questions and answers that appear on the test as well as the theory explaining the answers. These manuals can be purchased from Ham Radio Outlet in Anaheim, CA. A good manual is written by Gordon West, WB6NOA, and is entitled 2014-2018 Technician Class ($21.95).

One of our members, Gayle W9GCG, has compiled a number of online websites that will help find information and practice tests that will help non licensed non-members.
