The Laguna Woods Amateur Radio Club has been in existance for more than 40 years and its membership is composed of residents who live in the retirement community of Laguna Woods Village and are licensed amateurs
At the start of 2012 we were informed that our tower, which was on the roof of Clubhouse 1, would have to be removed. The clubhouse was to be reroofed with a plastic membrane and it was felt that the tower would violate the integrity of the membrane. After looking for a new tower site in the immediate area none could be found. We were offered the old head-end building and tower at Gate 14. We accepted with the stipulation that new amateur antennas would be placed on the tower and that we could operate UHF and VHF from Clubhouse 1 as well as operate HF remotely using the tower at Gate 14.
The head-end building was remodeled and new antennas were put on the tower. The new antennas installed were a Cushcraft 4 element Tribander with 40 meter add on, a Cushcraft ARX2B Ringo Ranger for our repeater, a Cushcraft AR 270B 2M/440 antenna, and a Windom Wire Antenna. A Hy Gain Tailtwister Rotator with a Green Heron RT-21 digital control unit rotates the beam.
We are using a Kenwood TS 480 SAT for remote HF operation in conjunction with Remoterig equipment.
Our club is involved in providing emergency communications for the Village's Emergency Preparedness Program. We are a sanctioned Radio Emergency Civil Emergency Service (RACES) unit for The City Of Laguna Woods.
