I, W5UWY, began hamming in 1960 as Novice, WV6WPT, in a small northern California town named Graton. Following the required year as Novice, I upgraded to General, WA6WPT. In 1967 the family moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico. Upon applying for change of address, I was assigned the call WA5UWY. In November of 1998 I requested to change to W5UWY.

Pat, my xyl, and I have lived in these mountains for the past 6 years. I am currently serving as Chief of the James Canyon Volunteer Fire Department, hence the red Blazer.

For the past five years, we have hosted a "Ham Get Together" here at home, usually the first Saturday in June. We barbeque the brisket, and visitors bring "fixins" to go with barbeque. Attendance has ranged from 13 to 15 couples. We look forward to this "get together" each year. Hams and their families from this area are welcome. Bring your "fixins".

Personal History: Pat and I celebrated our 52nd wedding anniversary on November 1, 1998. We have six children, fourteen grandchildren, and nine great grands. I am a retgired Navy WWII veteran. Following my retirement from the Navy, I worked as a service technician for Sears, for several years. In 1972 I began teaching vocational elecronics at the high school level, in Clovis, New Mexico. Following four years at Clovis, during which time I earned a BS degree in Industrial Education, (at ENMU, Portales), I served as Assistant Trades and Industrial Supervisor, in the State Department of Education in Sante Fe. After two years in Santa Fe we moved to Lubbock, Texas, where I was Director of Vocational Education for Lubbock Christian College. During that two years, I earned a Master degree in Bible from Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA. I also served as Minister for the Church of Christ in several locations from California to Wisconsin. My last pulpit was the Mason Street Church of Christ, in Appleton, Wisconsin . In 1984, we moved back to this area from Wisconsin to help care for Pat's ailing mother. I finished my working career as a Wood Shop, and Electronics teacher at Gadsden High School, Anthony, New Mexico. I retired from teaching in May of 1990, subsequent to that I was appointed to the bench as a Municipal Judge. This was in the incorporated town of Anthony, Texas. In 1993, I gave up being a Judge, and we moved to the mountains. The area in which we live is known as James Canyon. Since moving to James Canyon, we have been involved with various community activities, including; water association, church, and fire department. While I serve as volunteer fire chief, Pat writes an article entitled "The James Canyon News" for the local monthly publication, called the "Mountain Monthly".

Following our move back to this area from the North, Pat has also been busy. She designed, edited and published a colloring book entitled: Know America Cololring and Activity Book. The book is written for the fourth grade level, and is currently in use by a number of schools from Alaska to Massachusetts, and from Michigan to Florida.During the time in Anthony, Pat spent five years, and inumerable hours establishing the first public lending library in Anthony. The Library is currently housed in a vacated school building in Anthony, NM. In 1994,Pat suffered a debilitating stroke that left her paralized on her right side. After four months of intense therapy, she has regained much of her mobility. Since that time, she has taken up quilting as therapy, and as a hobby. As of the date of this page she has completed twenty eight, and is almost finished with number twenty nine.
