The Armadillo Gang is a group of Amateur Radio Operators formed by a few individuals in 1981. The group's goal is to provide emergency communications when normal communications are lost after a major storm or disaster. Through its efforts, a self-contained communications trailer is now available for public service during these times.
Because a few companies and private individuals perceived the need for such a service, they donated the needed equipment to start the group. With much hard work and planning, the group restored the donated equipment. Today this equipment is kept in good working condition and can be put into service at any time.
The Armadillo Gang participates each year on the 3rd weekend of June in the nationwide emergency drill called Field Day. During this exercise, all of the equipment is set up under portable power and emergency conditions. The drill requires operating for 24 hours with as many radio contacts as possible. All amateur radio stations compete with other stations all over the country, competing for the highest score in their division. This is an excellent way to increase operating abilities. There are no prizes or monetary remunerations - only the satisfaction of knowing how effective the group can be in a real emergency.
The Armadillo Gang has also run special event stations to expose its operating capabi1ities to the public. These have included Bayfest celebrations, Shrimporee festivals Aransas Pass, and the Boy Scout Jamborees on the Air. More events are planned in the future, and a club station aboard the U.S.S. Lexington is under development. This project will proceed as donations are received.
In case of an actual emergency, The Armadillo Gang will be handling health and welfare information into and out of the Corpus Christi area. The group supports our community in case of disaster, provides public service, and public demonstrations of Amateur Radio.
