I was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1969. I lived there long enough for my two younger brothers to be born, and for my dad to finish his PhD. We moved to Raleigh, NC, in 1975.
I attended Wake County's public schools as I grew up. Always had an affinity for techy stuff, but never really got interested specifically in radios. Around the high-school timeframe, I developed a pretty strong interest in aviation and started taking programming courses (which would prove to be a critical part of my future).
Attended N.C. State University from 1987 through 1992. I majored in Computer Science, receiving my BS in May, 1992. I was a resident participant in State's Computer and Technology Theme Program, which pioneered NCSU's entry into the now-common practice of providing computing resources directly to the residence halls. It turns out that several of my classmates were hams, but I still didn't catch the bug.
During college, I started working as a co-op with IBM. I've worked in mainframe communication (SNA stuff), PC system management, and now Internet security. It's been fun, and pays the bills.
