You might oughta come back tomorrow.... cause I ain't sure we are home.

Howdy friends! We are Read W4HOZ and Becky KD5RHB,husband and wife down here in Lucedale in southern Mississippi. Please bear with us while we are trying to get our stories straight and gathering up some appropriate photos for our ham radio web page.

I (Read) was first licensed as WN4HOZ in Greenville, SC back in 1954. In 1955 I moved to Kingsport, TN where I operated as W4HOZ and later graduated From Dobyns-Bennett High School.

This is me way back in 1955. Big old BC348 receiver (black box on the right side) and a variety of ARC5 command gear (receivers and transmitters) scattered around.

For you new guys, ARC5 command rigs were military surplus equipment from WW2. Rare was the novice back in the 50s who did not have at least a passing acquaintance with this gear. You could do a lot of radioing with a few bucks with such equipment. My back up transmitter was a mighty 6L6 - another staple of the the era.

Back in my younger days! The Bays Mountain Hamfest at Kingsport, TN in the summer of 1957. I am more or less in the center and the few folks that I can remember from those long ago days are identified (correctly, I hope).

In 1958 I joined the Air Force as a Morse Intercept operator, later becoming an instructor. Too much radioing burned me out on communications for a while and I let my license expire. I did a a lot of rambling before ending up here in coastal Mississippi. Not long ago I came back into the hobby again as KD5RHA and Becky became KD5RHB. And just very recently I was delighted to get back my original call, W4HOZ, and hamming is fun all over again!

The Lucedale Field Station

Chief Op Read W4HOZ with Snowy Cat, the mighty Russell Puppy, and faithful ole Ditch Dog - as fine a crew of hard working, hard drinkin' intercept operators as I've worked with since back in my days in the 6913th R.S.M. (USAFSS).

A/1C ROY S. GOLDSMITH-W4ZCR

On May 19, 2003 my USAF (SS) Morse Intercept operator pal Roy "Goldie" Goldsmith, W4ZCR, became a Silent Key. Originally licensed in 1953 as W3WAF, Roy lived in northern Virginia with his XYL Peggy "Peg" Goldsmith.

Roy had a great sense of humor--he had to in order to live with me, "Runk", "Turk" and "Skinner". We were all in the 6913th Radio Squadron Mobile in Bremerhaven, Germany in the late 50s. My call was AJ3ZJ and Goldy's was DL4SU. We "borrowed" a R390 and a BC610 from the Air Force and set up a ham shack in the basement of the barracks. I can well remember carrying that BC610 down the stairs--it must have weighed 500 lbs. Goldie did a lot more operating that I did - I couldn't see coming off an 8 hour trick of copying CW and then working DX -- GUHOR! But.... Goldie could!

Recently "Runk" recalled the time that he thought we had all gone to town (to the Blue Angel bar) and he sat down to record Tony Pizzalatto's jazz and blues records. After recording for two hours he played the tape back and all he could hear was "CQ CQ CQ DX this is Delta Lima Four Sugar Whisky".

Goldie, 73s. I enjoyed those QSOs

We'll soon be updating this site with more gory details of our hamming life as well as pictures and stories about our family, work (together we operate an archaeological consulting business), US Air Force experiences, our farm and animals, our other interests (such as caving, horses, etc.), and whatever else might seem appropriate.

Thanks a heap for stopping by. Come back again real soon!

Hey! Wait a minute - don't forget to sign our guestbook down there below! Thanks.

Over ten million animals are abused, neglected or abandoned yearly. Click the button above to visit The Animal Rescue Site (http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/home) every day to give a bowl of food to an abandoned animal -- at no cost to you -- and participate in the fight to save animals in need.

Funding for nutritious food, paid for by site sponsors, is generated when you click on the "Feed an Animal in Need" button on the Home page of The Animal Rescue Site at http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/home ...

Last year, from the site's launch in July 2002 to the end of 2002, visitors to The Animal Rescue Site funded a total of 11,720,254 bowls of food! In 2003, with your help, we'll help many more animals in need. But it depends on the number of people who visit the site.

So, please make visiting The Animal Rescue Site part of your daily routine and help spread the word to your friends and family!

Thanks from Read, Becky and our animal pals:
