Introduction

ADIF (Amateur Data Interchange Format) is used to transfer amateur log data between different logging programs and is also the format used to upload log data to eQSL.CC.

In order to match up QSO data entered by radio amateurs around the world for QSL confirmation purposes it is necessary for eQSL.CC to require some additional content specifications. Many currently available electronic logging programs provide the means to create an ADIF file meeting these specifications.  To help you in locating an acceptable logging program eQSL.CC provides a list of loggers that are known to be compatible.

Uploading an ADIF log to eQSL.CC is a simple process. Doing so automatically confirms all of the QSO’s in your log. However, when the logs contain more than 1000 QSO’s or so you may experience problems with the browser timing out before the entire log has been uploaded.  ADIF Splitter provides a work around for this problem by splitting large log files into several smaller ones that can be uploaded one at a time.

Installing ADIF Splitter

First be sure that you have the Microsoft .NET Framework installed on your computer. Next download adifsplitter.zip from http://www.w3zj.com to a convenient folder and open the zip file. If you are using WinZip you can now just click on Setup.exe to install ADIF Splitter. Other zip programs may require you to first extract the files to a temporary folder and then click Setup.exe. The Setup program will then guide you through the remainder of the installation process.

Uninstalling ADIF Splitter

To uninstall ADIF Splitter go to your Control panel, select Add/Remove programs then select ADIF Splitter and click the Remove button.

Splitting ADIF Files

After starting ADIF Splitter you will note that the default size for each of the split log files is 1000 QSO’s. In most cases this is a good size however if you have a fast internet connection you may be able to increase that to 2 or even 3 thousand QSO’s to create fewer split files. Conversely if you have a slow connection you may need to reduce that number to 500 or so.

After adjusting the number of QSO’s to a value that works for you select the “File” menu and choose “File to split…”. This will bring up a file open dialog box where you can locate and select the ADIF file you want to split. As soon as you have selected the appropriate file ADIF Splitter will proceed to split the large file into as many smaller ones as are necessary. The new files are created in a temporary folder on your machine and are named the same as the original file with an underscore and a sequential number appended to the end of the name. When ADIF splitter completes the splitting operation it will indicate that it is done by displaying the total number of QSO’s processed and the number of split files created in the “Results” panel. It also displays the full path names of the split files.  Note that these temporary files are deleted when you exit from ADIF Splitter.

Uploading Split Files to eQSL.CC

When the splitting operation is complete click on one of the file names in the “Files Created” panel. This will place the file name on your clipboard, take you to eQSL.CC and open a small dialog box which you will use after the file upload is complete. If you are already logged on to eQSL.CC, the “Upload ADIF Logpage will automatically open. If you are not already logged on, log on now and then click on “Upload ADIF Log File”. Now go to the box labeled “File to Upload”, right click in the box and select “Paste”. Remember the name of the split file you selected is already on the clipboard, so selecting “Pate” puts the correct name in the box. Now click the “Upload It” button and wait for both steps 1 and 2 of the upload process to complete. If the upload was successful click “Yes” in the ADIF Splitter dialog box. This will remove the selected file fron the “Files Created” list and take you back to the main ADIF Splitter window, where you can select the next file to upload.  Continue this procedure until you have uploaded all of the split files and there are none left in the list. Finally, close ADIF Splitter either by selecting “Exit” in the “File” menu or by clicking the “X” in the upper right hand corner of the Splitter window.  If errors occur during the file uploads see the section entitled “What If Errors Occur

What If Errors Occur

1)      Don’t worry about duplicates, they are not really errors. That just means that you tried to upload a log entry that was already in your eQSL Outbox. If you want to verify the duplicates, print out the page showing what QSO’s are duplicates and when you are finished uploading, go to your Outbox and look up the duplicate QSO’s, You may have created  log entries by confirming a QSO’s on-line or entering them manually.

1)      If an error occurs due to a browser time out, click “No” in answer to the question “Did the upload complete successfully” question and try again. Sometimes this can occur due to a temporary slow down of the internet or a temporary problem at eQSL.CC. If this problem persists, reduce the number in the number in the “Number of QSO’s per file” box and start over.

2)      Other types of errors may be listed by eQSL.CC and these will have to be treated in accordance with the error message. If you can’t resolve the problem on your own, write a message to [email protected]. Be sure to indicate exactly what you are trying to do, what is happening and what error messages you are seeing.

3)      If you have a problem with ADIF Splitter itself, please contact [email protected] and again describe the problem as well as you can.

Sometime folks will write in saying “It Doesn’t Work”. That won’t help to solve the problem. You need to describe what you tried to do, what you expected to happen and what actually happened. It will also help if you mention some details about your computer such as speed and amount of ram, what operating system you are using and what internet browser you are using. We know the program works but we haven’t had the opportunity to test it under all possible conditions and you may have discovered a defect that applies specifically to your configuration – work with us to find the problem and fix it.
