I am deeply saddened by Byron’s passing. He truly was one of the gentlemen amongst our group of hams.

de Mike "BUB" Bouchard N3BUB

Byron and myself came from the Lehigh Valley, I from Allentown and he a few miles South in Trexlertown. I was ahead of him by a few years in age but he
was a licensed Ham two years before me.

I met Byron at the first PARK Christmas party that I attended; he was very congenial and a great table partner. He and I recalled many "Firsts" in
amateur radio, and we discovered that we both had the same eyeball contact with an old timer named Pres Schuler who had the only electronic store in
Allentown that catered to Hams as well as the professional guys.(Pres honored the original price quote to Byron for a Hallicrafters S38 receiver
after the prices went up three dollars).

I regret that I did not get to meet with him more often than I did.
de John J. Miller W3DHO

How sad!  You might know that Byron was one of the best RTTY contesters in Eastern Pennsylvania.
de Bob Schreibmaier K3PH

We all will remember Byron as being a true gentleman. He was always kind to all and had a wonderful sense of humor. And who could forget that great smile ?
de Dave Haney W3SJ

I first read about Byron in an article in the PocoNoise several years ago.  He became my inspiration in the RTTY field of our hobby.

He was a true gentleman and will be greatly missed.
de John Schreibmaier,W3MF

I have nothing but good and fond memories of Byron.  He and I were licensed at about the same time, myself in 1950 and he a year or so later. I went in under the old Class B/Class A system, and he became a Novice under the new (then) system of licensing.

Even though we later diverged into different pathways in amateur radio, because of our common backgrounds, we shared many similar recollections of ham radio in the 50s and 60s. Our Thursday AM breakfast club at the local diner was faithfully attended by Byron when he was in town, and my conversations with him were always spirited and informative. His knowledge of ham radio was quite remarkable, and I learned a lot of the newer technology from him, just by listening on Thursday mornings.

His unfailing good humor and positive outlook in spite of his physical limitations enabled him to compile a remarkable DX record in the past few years. I will certainly miss him, and his departure is a sad day for our local ham radio scene.

I was deeply saddened to hear we lost a true gentleman of the hobby.

I haven't spoken much to Byron in recent years since we no longer made many trips back to the Poconos. It was great to meet with Byron when my
son and I made a weekend trip the last weekend in December and we were able to meet at breakfast on Sunday, the second time in two months we'd
seen each other, having not met for probably the last 2 years. Who knew it would be the last time we'd see each other.

I hardly worked Byron on the air and most of my memories of him usually involved getting together at breakfast, where he was the soft-spoken
gentleman at the corner seat.

In a ham radio world gone crazy we need more people like Byron.

Byron was a person you could talk to about anything and he knew just about everything. I remember discussing the history of amateur radio with him one summer afternoon and he told me things that I had not known. AND he always made it so interesting. He will be missed.

My condolences to , Byron's family . I knew ,Byron when he first came to , IBM ,Endicott , New York . He was much respected and known for his wit ,humor and technical knowledge .

When he introduced himself to us ,he said the translation for his last name is " light in the forest " . And , that it was .

If I recall correctly , his call sign was WB2KVV , and he was a member of our Radio Club , SVARA , Susquehanna Valley Amateur Radio Club . One of our fun times was the " Halloween Pumpkin Patrol" .  A Ham operator ( rig in tow ) escorted an auxiliary Policeman to patrol a given neighborhood to report malicious behavior .

I knew ,Byron was from this area ,but I lost track of him over the years .

Before I moved out of the Stroudsburg area,  I always enjoyed  weekly breakfasts immensely with other local amateurs from the Stroudsburg area.  Byron was one of them.
I will miss the wonderful fun times we had at those sessions!  He had an infectious sense of humor along with his great personality.  I was awfully fond of him, and I will never ever forget him.  They broke the mold after he was born.
de Mike Ruggiero W2NVR

When I close my eyes and see Byron's face he is always smiling. He had the most quick and sincere smile. I never, in all the years I knew him, heard him say a mean thing about another person. He truly looked at things with a "glass half full" attitude.  Byron will be missed by all who had the pleasure of coming in contact with him and his
quick wit. He was a true Gentleman.

ELMERS

For those not familiar with the term, an Elmer is an important help to new people just getting into
the hobby. Most of us were fortunate enough to have someone take us under his or her
wing and act as a guide or mentor in the early stages of learning the fundamentals
of amateur radio.

We feel that it is important to be available to people who express an interest in amateur radio. Here is an initial list of PARK members who are willing and ready to be Elmers. Please feel free to call them
and/or E-mail them if you are in need of help or advice.
