Hello:

I am a part-time HAM ….  I have too many interests to be a full-time one.  I have always been interested in electronics and pursued that field by going to college and getting a Bachelors Degree in Electronics Engineering from Penn State.  While going to college, one of my friends introduced me to the Amateur Radio world.  He was a nut about it and had his car outfitted with several radios and lots of antennas.  In those days, the radios were considerably larger than today’s radios and were all of the tube variety.  There was hardly any room for anyone but him to get into the car and it’s a wander he didn’t kill himself driving down the road and attempting to make a QSO.  I owe my initial interest to him.

Anyway … after graduating from college, I took a job in Southern Maryland.  Being an electronics nut, I have always owned a lot of radios, including a number of short-wave radios and scanners that I have used to monitor the waves and local repeaters.  I started to get ready for a license a number of time by learning the rules and technical info and started on the code but for some reason never completed it to the point of taking the exam until recently.   In January 2001, I decided to go ahead and get a technician license which I completed.

As I said, I do this only part-time.  I own two mobile radios and two HT’s.  Both of my mobiles are ICOM’s.  I have a 2m/70cm IC-2820 and a 2m/70cm IC-2710.  My first HT was an old Radio Shack HT-220 that my son gave to me (he is a Radio Shack manager).  It was a broken unit that was repaired and never picked up by the owner.  Being an electronics nut, that radio was just a little too big and out-of-date for my taste and I decided to get a smaller unit so I bought a Kenwood TH-F6A tri-band HT that I like a lot.

My other interests include training and showing dogs in AKC Obedience Trials along with my wife, woodworking, DIY projects around the house and lots of family time with my son, daughter and grandsons.

If you’re ever in Southern Maryland, give me a shout.  I monitor all the local 2m and 70cm and frequencies.
