The following excerpts were taken from recent ARRL news letters.

KANSAS HAM, SON, ELECTROCUTED WHILE ERECTING ANTENNAS

While putting up backyard antennas on the afternoon of Sunday, July 13, Edward Thomas, KC0TIG, of Kansas City, Kansas, and his son Jacob were electrocuted. Edward, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene. Jacob, 27, was rushed to the hospital but died later that day. Initial reports suggest that the antenna they were installing came in contact with 7620 V power lines. Neighbors reported a "loud popping sound" and the electricity went out on the block.

Jacob's 7 year old daughter witnessed the tragedy and ran to the neighbor's yard, calling for help. Byron Kirkwood and another neighbor attempted to perform CPR on the men; the neighbor also called 911. Robert Mullendore, a spokesman for the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (KCBPU), was quoted by Kansas City television station KSBH as saying it is rare to survive a shock as strong as the two men received:

W1HQ NOTES ICOM DONATIONS

Earlier this month, ARRL Contest Branch Manager Sean Kutzko, KX9X, presented ICOM Division Manager Ray Novak, N9JA, and ICOM Sales Representative Pat Marcy, W7PZ, with a plaque, thanking ICOM for its support of ARRL stations W1AW and W1HQ throughout the years. ICOM recently donated an IC-756PROIII and an IC-746PRO to W1HQ, the ARRL's Laird Campbell Memorial HQ Operators Club station www.arrl.org/news/stories/2008/02/13/101/?nc=1>.

Kutzko, who serves as President of W1HQ, said it was "a real treat to get W1HQ operational again as a thriving club station. ICOM has been an enormous help in getting the W1HQ back on the air. With the addition of the 756ProIII, we are able to take our DXing and contesting pursuits to the next level at the club. The 746Pro has also been a valuable addition; we are now on-the-air on 6 and 2 meter SSB and CW."

Club Activities

Cliff Miller,KB3AGT, Jerry Kiehl, WB3DUD, his wife Linda and I, Darrell Norris WA3AJQ, traveled to the Somerset Ham Fest on July 20th where we met and talked to Carl Hvozda, N3PIE along with a several members of Johnstown's Conemaugh Valley radio club. The weather was rather hot and humid however, I think we all enjoyed the event. They had about four vendors set up inside and a fair amount of tailgaters outside, there appeared to be a pretty nice turnout.

The same four of us traveled to Clearfield to attend the Quad County Amateur Radio Club's ham / computer fest on August 9th . Their ham fest was held in conjunction with Airport Awareness Day at the Clearfield / Lawrence Airport. We found it especially interesting looking at three antique automobiles as well as three ultra light airplanes. We also had the opportunity to talk to a couple ultra pilots, one had flown his from California, this had to be a tremendous experience. The weather was great. Breakfast was available in the morning with hot dogs etc available in the afternoon. The ham fest itself was rather small.

Meeting Minutes - August 5, 2008

President Darrell Norris, WA3AJQ, called the meeting to order at ____7:32_PM local time.

There were no comments or corrections to the July 1, 2008 minutes.

Financial Report: Rusty O'Donnell, WB3EUQ

Field Day expenditures have been paid. We will soon need to look at somehow raising some money, either through a fund raiser or simply asking for donations.

We need to discuss this at the next meeting.

Old Business:

ARES: E.C. Robert Zugates, KB3JOF (Not at meeting)

Jerry Kiehl submitted a report for Robert: ARES will only count the ARES members that check in during the Monday night nets. Robert will take your check in for the month, either in person; or by telephone or email. Ideally, he would prefer you check in during the Monday night net.

Please give Robert your cooperation in this matter.

At a previous meeting Robert reported he had talked to John Rodgers, N3MSE, WPA Section Manager, about possible ARES training sometime in the near future.

Net Coordinator: Jerry Kiehl, WB3DUD

Net control operators are always needed and appreciated.

Robert Zugates, KB3JOF and Jerry will take turns as net control this month.

RACES: Rusty O'Donnell, WB3EUQ

Rusty reported that Paul Beatty, the Director of Indiana County Emergency Management, passed away.

There was a discussion regarding the difference between ARES and RACES. ARES is a local situation and will be in effect until such time a formal disaster is declared by the proper authority, RACES will then become the official means of communications.

ECHOLINK: Rusty O'Donnell, WB3EUQ

EchoLink Is still up and running although no one is using it. Darrell, WA3AJQ again expressed his appreciate for Echolink when he's in Florida.

Repeater Operation - Elmer Sorisio, KB3WG (Not at meeting)

At a previous meeting an assistant Trustee was being considered.

Field Day

Bills were paid. Rusty has plates, sodas etc left over, he is turning this over to Richard Stinson, KB3KBC, for our picnic in September.

Meetings - Darrell Norris, WA3AJQ

All members are encouraged to consider items for the meeting agendas and bring a fellow ham / member or a perspective ham to a meeting.
