October 2005 News Letter

Darrell R. Norris - WA3AJQ

Recently Shirley McCombs KB3DTH resigned as our club Secretary / Treasurer and I've been assuming those responsibilities.

I've learned a little about the job and believe me, I've come to appreciate the job Shirley did.

I want to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to Shirley for her service to the club. THANKS SHIRLEY!
We wish you the best.

Our ham fest was a pretty good success thanks to Bill Menk W3LAB who spear headed the event. Thanks also to all who participated and to those who attended. Thanks all !!

The 2006 elections are coming up in November, if your interested in any of the club offices for next year, 2006, please let us know.

Robert Zugates KB3JOF is putting our 2006 membership applications on our web site in three different formats; pdf, htmL and Microsoft Word. I'm also planning to distribute the application as a Microsoft Word attachment to those club members for which I have an E-mail address. I'll also make a few copies available at the November and December meetings for those not having internet access.

Please complete the application and forward it to Kim Frech, our secretary / treasurer, when paying your dues. We'd like to have as complete a record as possible.

Kim will be the only one accepting dues, please keep this in mind.

Remember our Christmas party is scheduled for 6:00 PM December 11th at Hoss's in Indiana.

73's Darrell WA3AJQ

Meeting Minutes from - October 4, 2005

The meeting was called to order by the president, Darrell Norris WA3AJQ, at 7:30pm

MINUTES FROM LAST MEETING:

No additions or corrections - the minutes stand as written.

FINANCIAL REPORT:

Darrell reported checks issued and deposits made however, couldn't give a final bottom line since he didn't have all the amounts spent from the ham fest, picnic etc.

OLD BUSINESS:

SECRETARY / TREASURER

Darrell brought up about still not having a secretary / treasurer and read a letter he wrote:

"I solicited names of " full " club members who might be interested in filling the position, via my monthly news letters, Monday night ARES nets, our regular club meeting on September 6th, emails to those thirty some members having email addresses listed, as well as Saturday morning breakfasts, I've not heard from anyone being interested in filling the clubs secretary/ treasure position.

Sometime ago Kim Frech expressed an interest in the position. Kim is not a club member nor is she a licensed amateur radio operator. She has attended our regular club meetings for many months with Jimmy St.clair N3TQR. Kim has indicated she is willing to pay her dues to join the club and "I think" she might entertain the idea of getting her license. Our club by-laws require officers to be full club members however, in view of the above, I'm asking the club members, ( having a 10 member quorum present ) to approve Kim's request to become our secretary / treasurer and fill that position as defined in our by-laws, until such time a full club member is willing to fill that position. Will someone move and second my request?

Marcia Malcolm KD4ITP made the motion and Rusty O'Donnell, WB3EUQ, second it. The motion passed to make Kim Frech our secretary / treasurer.

ARES:

The simulated emergency test (S.E.T.) is currently scheduled for Saturday November 5th. We'll discuss the details at the November meeting.

Questions were brought up regarding the removal of amateurs listed but not checking into the Monday night nets. Our emergency coordinator, Roger N3ULC, indicated he routinely reviews the list and removes those not checking in for a three to four month period. You can be reinstated and start a new cycle by checking in as a "new check in".

Some member's feel the list should be reviewed on a monthly basis and names removed,

The call list is also taking to much time. Marcia Malcolm KD4ITP suggested we not read the location of each participant in order to shorten the time. Roger felt this is no problem...

Roger will look into getting ID cards for the ARES members not having them.

RACES:

Rusty, WB3EUQ, mentioned that formal training will be required by Indiana County in order to participate in emergency RACES exercises in the future. Rusty will provide more information later.

CLUB WEB SITE: WWW.QSL.NET/W3BMD

Robert, KB3JOF, pointed out that a - for sale section; meeting schedule / activates sections have been added to the club web site. We will be posting our membership applications for 2006 on the web site in three different formats: pdf, Microsoft Word and html.

Darrell also mentioned he will be sending an email attachment in a Microsoft word format as well.

CLUB PICNIC:

Bill, W3LAB, thanked everyone that came and said they had a good time, except for the rain. He mentioned that next year when we have our club picnic we ought to have it else where and make it handicapped accessible for Jim St.clair N3TQR.

VE TESTING:

There was no one scheduled as reported by Dave, N3DZ.

HAM FEST:

Everything went well as Bill, W3LAB, reported: Thanks to Kim and Deny Clark who helped Bill in the kitchen, Darrell, Terry and Rich who helped with parking. Kim Frech who sold 50/50 tickets and issued admission tickets at the door. Rusty and Larry for giving directions and talking people in and Robert for making food runs and Dave for making all the signs and putting them up! We cleared about $352.14.

Darrell submitted a list of considerations for next year:

(1) Later start and ending times be considered;
(2) We need to take a few membership applications and ID cards with us for new members;
(3) We need signs to indicate drawing times for 50/50 and the door prize's;
(4) Know what the door prizes are;
(5) Work out the fine details and stick to them.
(6) Consider a different location for next year.
Bill, N3LAB, suggested we consider the Marion Center Park.

THANKS TO BILL MENK FOR MAKING THIS THE SUCCESS IT WAS!!!

REA:

Darrell reported he contacted REA on September 12th and requested a seasonal plan. We will read the meter and be billed in October and April of each year. We must pay the service charge in advance. We will be billed at the regular cost per KWH, the plan is not a premium cost.

CHRISTMAS PARTY:

Scheduled for Sunday December 11th at 6 pm at hoss's in Indiana.

NEW BUSINESS:

2006 NOMINATIONS:

Darrell distributed a nomination request form to; Ric, AL7DH, Roger, N3ULC and Rusty, WB3EUQ, along with himself, WA3AJQ, all four will be contacting the members not already contacted by email to determine whether their interested in being nominated for any club offices next year

.

DECEMBER MEETING:

Darrell asked if there's any interest in holding the December meeting as a Saturday morning breakfast, same as last year. This was tabled until the November meeting.

FOUR COUNTY GET TOGETHER NEXT YEAR:

During a Saturday breakfast, Ed Wilbert, N3LFB, from Butler County, suggested we consider a get together sometime with several counties. Darrell suggested, Indiana, Armstrong, Butler and Cambria. We can consider this next year.

NOTES OR COMMENTS:

Echo link was turned over from Roger, N3ULC to Rusty, WB3EUQ.

We are in the process of making up club ID cards for 2006.

Please complete the club membership questionnaire and submit it with your dues payment.

50/50 collected $10.00, Jimmy St.Clair won and donated his $5.00 back to the club - Thank you Jimmy!

Henry Hobart paid his dues for 2006 at the ham fest.

Allen St.Clair, KB3EPO, indicated he has a 2 meter beam antenna and rotor for sale. He's moving out of the area soon.
