ARLX001 Hiram Percy Maxim II Passes Away at 72
The grandson of ARRL co-founder Hiram Percy Maxim, W1AW, died at home in Lyme, Connecticut on Saturday, January 12 after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer. Hiram Percy Maxim II -- called HPM just like his grandfather -- was 72.
Not a ham, Maxim told the Newington Amateur Radio League at an October 2002 meeting that he doesn't feel he shares the inventive talents of his grandfather and great-grandfather, who held many patents between them; Maxim's great-grandfather invented the machine gun.
He told the club audience that his grandfather took on radio and filmmaking as diversions from inventing -- an endeavor he considered extremely hard work. He also thought of Amateur Radio as a means to "bring together" individuals from distant locations and believed that communication was a key to better understanding other people and cultures.
The elder Maxim -- often referred to as "The Old Man," or "TOM" -- was an amateur film buff, and a highlight of his grandson's 2002 presentation was a short 16 mm film that showed the elder Maxim and some of his friends working, relaxing and frolicking on the grounds of the family's summer home in Lyme, Connecticut, where HPM II lived until his death.
His son, Merritt Maxim, told the ARRL, "Even though he didn't have an Amateur Radio license, he was aware of the importance of his family's role in founding the League. Through his father, my grandfather -- an active engineer -- he continued to maintain an interest in all things mechanical."

FLORIDA HAMS HELP OUT WHEN NWS GOES DARK
On Tuesday, February 12, a tornado touched down in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Unfortunately, National Weather Service (NWS) alerts failed due to problems with phone circuits. Dennis Decker, Warning Coordinator Meteorologist with the NWS in Melbourne, said two of their four transmission lines went down that afternoon around 3:30, but were back up five hours later. Messages are carried to towers via telephone, he said.
"That's a big issue when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather alerting radio is not working," said Brevard County Emergency Management Director Bob Lay. The county went into backup mode, using the volunteer emergency alert system. The NWS activated Amateur Radio operators to help get the word out about the tornado warning. "We have ham operators to tell us when they see something," Decker said.

I attended the Hernando County Amateur Radio Club's ham fest here in Brooksville Florida this morning. The weather was beautiful which is typical for February in Florida. They had a great turn out. Their ham fest is at the fair grounds with a lot of parking area and a large area indoors and yes they had a lot of tailgaters. The cost to get in was $6.00, the young men with "Lions" on their shirts, provided hot dogs, hamburgers, coffee etc. I noticed there wasn't anywhere to set down to eat, I'm sure this must have hurt sales,

Ham Fest 2008: Rusty O'Donnell, WB3EUQ
Rusty had previously checked on the price to rent the Armagh Fire Hall, the price quoted was $125 for four hours or $150 for 24 hours (Since we're a ham radio club) Rusty was going to check with the Armagh Fire Chief to determine what the quoted prices include ie: kitchen etc.
There was little discussion at the January meeting since so many members were absent. It was suggested we have the ham fest in the fall since we're rather slow in the planning process. It was also noted that we need to do a better job at advertising, ARRL as well as other ham fests !!
