ARLB022 FCC Looks to Raise Vanity Call Sign Fees for Second Consecutive Year

The FCC released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and Order (NPRM) on May 14 seeking to raise fees for Amateur Radio vanity call signs. Currently, a vanity call sign costs $12.30 and is good for 10 years; the new fee, if the FCC plan goes through, will go up to $13.40 for 10 years, an increase of $1.10.

The following is an excerpt taken from a recent ARRL bulletin, I can't imagine anyone copying code at a speed of 52.2 words per minute.

HIGH SPEED TELEGRAPHY ON THE WORLD STAGE

The October 1936 issue of QST reported on the first official "Amateur Code Speed Contest" ever held. Eugene A. Hubbell, W9ERU, took home the silver trophy with his wining speed of 52.2 words per minute. Held at the ARRL Central Division Convention that year, the contest required operators to decipher plain language text for two minute intervals that ranged in speed from 25 to 52.7 words per minute. "Only bona-fide amateurs, holding at least an amateur operator's license, were eligible" to compete in the contest, the article stated .

Club Activities

We still have our ARES net every Monday night on the two meter repeater, 146.190. Terry Carnahan KB3JOD, is our net coordinator and is looking for people to serve as net control, so please consider helping out.

Robert Zugates, KB3JOF, is our Indiana County ARES Emergency Coordinator.

Our clubs covered dish picnic is tentatively scheduled for September 20th at Jimmy St Clairs, around 1:00 PM, I'm hoping for a good turnout.
