Christmas Party

We enjoyed our annual club Christmas party on Sunday December 9th at Fire Mountain in Indiana. We had some twenty people enjoyed the event. Thanks to Roger and Kathy Lute for making the plans, reservations etc.

Ken Snyder, AA3IO, in Iraq

I received an email from Ken on December 6th, 2007 in which he said hello to all our club members and the Saturday morning breakfast gang.

Ken said his trip to Iraq was delayed with a three day stay in Kuwait City while waiting for a Visa stamp which they require. He said the environment there is rugged and there are a lot of sandstorms. He also said it was interesting to see all of the camels in Kuwait City area and the buildings reflected wealth beyond anything he had ever seen.

Ken also asked about the status of amateur radio operations in Iraq, I forwarded the following ARRL information to him. Hopefully one of these days someone might have the opportunity to talk to Ken on the radio.

ARRL Letter - VOL 26, No 46, dated Friday November 16,2007

* Iraq Back on the Air Next Week: Diya Sayah, YI1DZ, President of the Iraqi Amateur Radio Society (IARS), announced November 13 that effective November 20, all Amateur Radio activity will be "back to normal" in Iraq. Sayah said, "All Amateur Radio operators in Iraq who carry a valid Iraqi license will be able to use their radios according to regulations of IARU Region 1 and the IARS." Amateur Radio activity in Iraq was suspended in March of this year, with the suspension affecting both Iraqi citizens as well as any foreigners -- including military personnel and contractors -- who have been on the air from Iraq. The request to halt all ham radio activity and the issuance of licenses in Iraq originated with a letter from the Iraqi Ministry of Defense to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as part of a new security plan, Sayah said.

AMATEUR RADIO

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

THE FOUNDATION FOR AMATEUR RADIO, INC., a non-profit organization with headquarters in Washington, D.C., plans to administer fifty-five (55) scholarships for the academic year 2008 - 2009 to assist licensed Radio Amateurs. The Foundation, composed of over seventy-five local area Amateur Radio Clubs, fully funds three of these scholarships. Eleven are funded with the income from grants. The remaining forty-one (41) are administered by the Foundation without cost to the various donors.

Licensed Radio Amateurs may compete for these awards if they plan to pursue a full-time course of studies beyond high school and are enrolled in or have been accepted for enrollment at an accredited university, college or technical school. The awards range from $500 to $3000 with preference given in some cases to residents of specified geographical areas or the pursuit of certain study programs. Non-USA residents are eligible to apply for some of the scholarships. Clubs, especially those in California, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin (areas of preferred residence for some of the scholarships), are encouraged to announce these opportunities at their meetings, in their club newsletters, during training classes, on their nets and on their world wide web home pages.

Old Business:

2008 Nominations & December Elections: Darrell Norris, WA3AJQ

We need to discuss the 2008 President and Secretary. Consider acquiring a post office box or mailing address without a name other than Indian County Amateur Radio Club (ICARC). I learned from 2007 experience that when we don't know who the following year secretary will be, we can't make up the new ID cards or membership applications.

2008 Officers:

Temporary President, Darrell Norris;

Vice President, Rusty O'Donnell;

Temporary Secretary / Treasurer, Kim Frech;

Board members:
Darrell Norris, Rusty O'Donnell, Terry Carnahan,
Larry Freeman, Jerry Kiehl, Elmer Sorisio,
Richard Stinson and Robert Zugates.

Trustee: Elmer Sorisio

Other responsibilities:

Monday night net control: Darrell Norris, Jerry Kiehl and Terry Carnahan.

Web master: Robert Zugates.

ARES Emergency Coordinator: Robert Zugates and Net Coordinator: Jerry Kiehl.

ARES: E.C. Robert Zugates, KB3JOF

Robert stated that after we complete our last net for the respective month, he needs our completed net call list as soon as possible so he can complete and submit his report.

Net Coordinator: Jerry Kiehl, WB3DUD

There was a very brief discussion regarding doing away with net control operators as suggested at a previous meeting. Some of the long time members never remembered this ever being. I personally don't think this would ever work.

Jerry Kiehl agreed to continue as net coordinator for 2008.

RACES: Rusty O'Donnell, WB3EUQ (Not at meeting)

ECHOLINK: Rusty O'Donnell, WB3EUQ (Not at meeting)

Robert Zugates reported that he has Larry Freeman's donated computer cleaned up and Windows 98 installed. It's ready to be put into service.

Darrell WA3AJQ hasn't checked with the restaurant to determine if their equipment is available.

Ham Fest 2008: Rusty O'Donnell, WB3EUQ (Not at meeting)

Rusty checked on the price to rent the Armagh Fire Hall, the price quoted was $125 for four hours or $150 for 24 hours (Since we're a ham radio club)

When? Spring? ____ Fall? _____ Month? _________ Day? _______

Date? ______________ No PA or neighboring ham fests are currently listed in either the November or December QST magazines.

There was very little discussion since Rusty wasn't available. We need to get into the details at the January meeting. QST has to have two months advance notice.

Darrell displayed a copy of his ARRL membership certificate printed from the ARRL's membership website.
