January 2006 News Letter

Darrell R. Norris - WA3AJQ

Here it is December 19th and I'm writing the January News Letter, you figure, I always feel I'm somewhat out of sync in writing a month ahead. Starting in February I think I'm going to do the News Letter for the month in which it's written and after that months meeting.

The December elections are over and we now know who the officers are for 2006, they are as follows:

President: Darrell Norris WA3AJQ; Vice President: Rusty O'Donnell WB3EUQ;

Secretary/Treasurer: Kim Frech; Trustee: Elmer Sorisio KB3WG

Board: Ric Lods AL7DH, Al Fister N3ZFZ, Jerry Kiehl WB3DUD, Steve Kuser KB3JNZ and Robert Zugates KB3JOF

Thanks to those who volunteered their service for 2006 as well as a big thanks to those who served in 2005.

I especially want to extend my appreciation to Twila Kerr N3SJR for her willingness to be considered for 2006 president, thanks Twila.

For those not knowing it, I just spent about five days in the hospital. Through an unrelated CAT scan, they discovered I had a blood clot in my one lung and in the hospital they found one in my left leg. I was put on an IV and am now on a blood thinner. So far everything is looking good, I hope it continues that way.

Roger Bartlebaugh N3ULC will not be serving as ARES EMERGENCY COORDINATOR next year. Jerry Kiehl WB3DUD volunteered to arrange for net control operators and, I hope the updated call list. If anyone is interested in the EC position, please let us know.

Jerry is going to do the net for January and I volunteered to do it from Florida in February VIA EchoLink.

If you haven't already, please pay your dues to Kim as soon as possible. Also, if you know of anyone that might be interested in joining the club, we'd love to have them.

I hope you have a great Holiday and a very happy New Year!

Thanks for your support,

Darrell Norris WA3AJQ

President

Meeting Minutes - Tuesday December 6th 2005

Minutes from last meeting:

Are there any additions or corrections? None

Financial Report:

Reported by Kim - Motion to accept by Ric Lods AL7DH, second by Fred Maize KM3M - Passed

Presidents Annual Report:

Per By- Laws: ARTICLE EIGHT: Section 1

I would characterize our clubs year as having been pretty successful.

For the first time since I've been a member, we made our club By-Laws and membership roster available to all members. Both are posted on our clubs web site at www.qsl.net/w3bmd along with hard copies made available at several of our monthly meetings;

We conducted a radio demonstration at the Indiana Mall; participated in both the MS and Torrance walks; Conducted a two day Technician class license training session from which Melissa Carnahan, KB3MDS, and Rachel DeStefano, KB3MDR, received their Tech licenses; participated in the ARRL field day activities; held our annual ham fest; sponsored two VE testing sessions and made our membership applications available on our web site in three different formats, pdf, html and Microsoft Word, doc. We conducted an ARES net for Indiana and surrounding counties every Monday night. Made the Sky Warn net available during severe storms.

On the social side we enjoyed our Saturday morning breakfasts; Wednesday night hot dog's at the repeater site; the annual club picnic and our annual Christmas party is scheduled for December 11th.

We had our secretary/treasurer, Shirley McCombs, KB3DTH, resign for personal reasons and Kim Frech was elected to fill that position; Our web site was turned over from Roger Bartlebaugh, N3ULC, our ARES Emergency Coordinator, to Robert Zugates, KB3JOF; EchoLink was taken over by Rusty O'Donnell, WB3EUQ, our RACES Officer and club's VP. Rusty also received the ARRL Atlantic Division's Certificate of Merit Award; we participated in the Western PA Simulated Emergency Test (S.E.T.) and ended the year with some forty nine (49) members.

I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the various activities or contributed in any way to make the year the success it was.

I'd also like to thank those who supported the club financially through dues etc. without your help we couldn't exist.

I've enjoyed being your president this past year and hope I made, at least, a small contribution as such. This has been an interesting experience.

I hope everyone enjoys our Christmas party on the 11th and has a great Christmas holiday.

Thanks again for your support,

Darrell Norris WA3AJQ
President

OLD BUSINESS:

ARES:

Roger Bartlebaugh announced that he will not be the Emergency Coordinator next year.

Darrell asked who is going to coordinate the net controls etc. Jerry Kiehl WB3DUD indicated to Darrell that he would consider it. Jerry also volunteered net control for January. Darrell WA3AJQ volunteered for February VIA EchoLink (assuming its up and running) Jerry Kiehl will be his back-up. We won't have a formal EC.

Marchia Malcolm KD4ITP indicated they will probably consider a turn at Monday night net control once they get their base station established.

RACES:

When is formal training scheduled? This item is still undecided per Rusty WB3EUQ.

Christmas Party:

Scheduled for December 11 at 6:00 PM at Hoss's Roger and Kathy indicated we have about twenty some people signed up, we can accommodate more since they reserved the larger room.

Sheetz MTO's (Kim)

Kim Frech reported on who had received the MTO books and that she had paid Sheetz. Its important that everyone sells their coupons and gets their money back to Kim no later than the January meeting. Roger and Kathy Lute as well as Darrell Norris donated $20 since neither are in a position to sell the coupons.

Four counties get together next year:

Consider breakfast with Indiana, Cambria, Armstrong and Butler county amateurs. where? and when? (Tabled until 2006)

NEW BUSINESS:

Presentation of future ICARC Award (Bill Menk)

Bill Menk W3LAB indicated he is going to develop an award certificate for the club and that Rusty O'Donnell WB3EUQ will be our first recipient. This was agreed to by our board members in September.

Activities for 2006:

Mall demonstration; training session; various walks; field day; club picnic; and the Christmas party?

These items need to be discussed at the January meeting as part of our 2006 planning.

Wal-Mart Donations

Steve Kuser KB3JNZ brought it to our attention that Wal-Mart donates money to various organizations and he feels they may consider us for the service we provide to Indiana County. It was determined we are not TAX EXEMPT. A motion was made by Marcia Malcolm KD4ITP and second by Al Fister N3ZFZ to have Steve submit an application to Wal-Mart for our club, motion passed.

Notes or comments?

Please pay your dues to Kim - Kim only!

EchoLink is now up and running per Rusty WB3EUQ, Robert Zugates KB3JOF needs the codes from Rusty.

Darrell is collecting money and will be presenting a Christmas card to Terry, our Saturday waitress. (Sign card now, collect money the 10th)

Darrell reported our repeater identification is cutting the call letters short - 3BMD? Rusty O'Donnell thinks this is on EchoLink only.

No one else had any additional comments.

50 / 50 was won by: Bill McMillen N3QM Bill donated it to the club. Thanks Bill.
