Amateur Radio Station W3ADO
gets new tower from local club

A special thanks to Anne Arundel Radio Club (W3VPR) President Norm Chipps (N3RZU) for arranging the donation of a 10 foot pyramid tower with rotator bearings. It was fitted with some additional bracing, a Yaesu GB-5400 az-el kit, a Cushcraft S2706 2m/440 compact beam (3 elements each), and a 2m/440 vert/horiz/circ-polarized 15-foot beam antenna donated by Bob Bruninga WB4APR. A Kansas City Tracker card will steer the rig for working the western hemisphere via satellite with a Kenwood TS-790 rig. This "tower #3" complements the two existing towers on the Naval Academy's Bancroft Hall 7th Wing roof, since the 3 Big Bertha's by the Sailing Basin are in reduced status.

We also appreciate the help of Steve NP3C who helped get the extra cable and provided expertise, Noel N3JVF and Dean N3ORT, who ran the cabling, Mike KF4PVN who helped transport the tower up 150 feet to the roof and supply extra aluminum pieces, and new member Midshipman 4/c Carl Lepard KE4ZCL who helped rig the antennas.

The new tower 3 stands proudly. It sports a Cushcraft S2706 compact 2m/440 beam (3 elements each), and a satellite 2m/440 (10 elements each axis).
A bit lopsided, but it works.
The new tower 3 stands proudly in the foreground against the Annapolis Naval Station VLF transmitter facility.
A better look at the Yaesu GB-5400 az-el motor system. The tower is strong enough to support an HF beam at a later date, with a more powerful rotator.
A better look at the Cushcraft S2706 2m/440 (not yet connected at the time of this picture).
Antennas at dusk. In the background is tower 2.
Tower 2 has a Cushcraft R7000, a Diamond X50 2m/440 vertical, and a fixed 2m beam. Also a small 440 repeater antenna for the cable company.
Looking into the Annapolis Harbor.
Tower 1 (most left) is a Radio Shack 32-foot collapsible, sporting a full G5RV. Tower 2 in the back right, and tower 3 in foreground.
