Hamfests

The The annual Elmira Hamfest and Computer Show will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2001 from 6 A.M. to 3 P.M. at the Chemung County Fairgrounds in Horseheads, NY. There will be VE testing, flea market, dealer displays, food, and prizes. Admission tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the gate. For additional information, please visit the Amateur Radio Association of the Souther Tier's page.

The ARRL Hamfest Calendar is here. Select NY in the State pulldown and press Show Events By State. Note that not all NY hamfests are an easy drive from Ithaca!

VE Testing and License Classes

VE tests are offered at most hamfests. Whenever you go to a VE test, you need to bring the following:

Most VEs are pretty friendly and provide pencils etc. Please follow their instructions exactly, as any break in test protocol may invalidate your new license!!! And besides, VEs are all volunteers as the name implies. Nobody gets rich giving ham radio exams!

During the Winter, sessions are normally held every other month in 230 Rockefeller Hall on the Cornell campus. For more information, contact Doug NE2T at 257-6066 or via email.

VE testing sessions are held in Endicott NY every second Saturday at the Endicott Fire Station. Start time is usually 1 or 2 PM depending on the examiner's schedule. Check the ARRL VE Test Calendar for monthly info. It's a good idea to check before you drive to Endicott!

Here's a link to the TCARC VE Testing web page. You might find other local VE test info there.

Club & Local Nets

For Fall 2001 the club will hold a 2 meter net on Monday nights at 9:00 PM on the club repeater (146.610-). All licensed amateurs are encouraged to check into this informal net. The net is not held during university breaks or the summer. This Fall we will be working on Morse code and getting current Tech licensees up to General or Extra class. The changes made to license requirements in 2000 means you only have to pass a 5 wpm code test now for licenses beyond Technician, a real deal!

TCARC holds a Swap & Local Info net every Sunday night at 8PM local time on the 146.970- repeater.

ARES of Tompkins County (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) holds their monthly Emergency Test & Information Net on the third Sunday night of each month at 7:30 local time on the 146.970- repeater. This is a good net for listening to what the local hams are running for emergency gear, and these are the people you will be working with should we be called on to assist in the event of a local disaster.

TCARC's Contest Committee holds a Contest Net on the first and third Sunday of each month, at 8:30 local time.

If you know of another local net you'd like listed, please let us know.
