So you are not a licensed amateur radio operator, and you've stumbled onto this site. Thinking that The Cherryville Repeater Association sounds like an interesting group of people (it is!), you are wondering "what IS Ham Radio?"

While this site is primarily intended as an information repository for the members of the Cherryville Repeater Association, it is also intended to provide information and education about Ham Radio in general, and some aspects of the hobby in particular.
