RETIREMENT
Howdy y’all
It has been 10 interesting years, but the time has come for me to step down as Editor of Uplink. I started doing the Uplink with Marty W2CG in 1989, can't believe it has been that long. It has been really great working with Marty all these years. Back then, our calls were KF5FK and NS2K.
At this time,
April and I have our townhouse that we are living in in Bridgewater on the
market, and plan to relocate out of the area when it sells. But even if we were
staying (or events cause us to change those plans), after 10 years I need a
break and the Uplink needs someone with new ideas, insights and energy to take
it to a new level.
Keeping up on Club
happenings, attending Board meetings, and gathering info from Officers and
members is what started me going to Board meetings way back then, and that led
to a position on the Board: and then Treasurer, and President. It has been a
fun time, and I will miss it.
I want to thank
all those who have helped, especially Marty, who continues to hold the database
and do the mailing, Judd, for all his wonderful articles, Roberto for the
interviews, and all who have contributed articles and information over the
years.

WRTC2000/IARU Radiosport
Every 4 years or so, the amateur radio world holds a contest championship for the elite of the contesting world. The top contesters from throughout the world are elected by their peers, and gather in a locale where they compete on so-called ‘even ground.’
The upcoming WRTC2000 will be an event unlike any other in contesting history. Over 400 contesters and other interested hams from nearly 50 countries are expected to descend upon Slovenia this July to see who will be win what is sure to be one of the closest competitions of all time. It's not only a great contest, but also a remarkable example of international good will.
They all use nearly identical equipment and antennas, and are closely watched by judges to ensure adherence to the contest rules and radio law. The last event was held in 1996 in California; this year it will be in Slovenia. The contest is run concurrently with the IARU DX Contest on the weekend of July 8th and 9th, operating both CW and SSB.
Once again, our own W2GD is recognized for his contesting skill by being included in this elite event! Way to go John! John will be teamed with Ron Harps, K8NZ representing the Northern Coast Contesters Club (PA). Callsigns for the contestants are announced at the last minute, and it is kept secret who is operating under which callsign to minimize any advantage from say, a group of friends only working one of the stations. (Callsigns will be like: S577A)
John and Elaine, KB2ERI, are scheduled to be in Europe July 4-19, in Slovenia July 5-11 for the WRTC2000. After the event, they will do some touring in Italy, Austria, Germany, and possibly Hungary or Poland before returning.
It's the Dits...
Vanity Dits, that is
Where as, too many Dits run together
And a B is only one Dit from a 6
Or an H only one Dit from a 5
Also a U is only one Dit from a V
Therefor, KB5U can easily become KB5V K6HU etc.
And no matter how many times you correct them, No matter how much slower you send it, They still don't get it right. Especially the B-6 5-H problem, Like how many times have you seen 6V6U called out as BV6V on packet in a contest. So the search was on, forget the initials (KB). Need a call with distinct differences from letters and numbers:

HORSE TRIALS Held
MAY 13TH
The Buck's County Horse Trials were held on Saturday May 13. We had a good turnout and great weather, and the event went off without a hitch. Those of us on the hill needed to use a little sunscreen; those in the woods needed some OFF. Stationed in sight of each jump the horse and rider had to take, we were there for safety reasons and also reported in progress of the riders. And Duncan looked great riding buy on his horse!
Ten (10) members worked the event. We covered four (4) events. Additional information; Our own Duncan MacRae placed fifth in the training class, which was the highest class of the day.
Members attending: KC2CMC Michael Varas, KA2YYB Denis Albisser, WB2F Bob Cherry, KA2TOV Mike Grohol, KB5U Keith Burt, KS4YG Jim Hetrick KA2YXY Ruth Fanjoy, W2NCN Bill Greenhalgh, KC2EBL Eleanor Miller and N2VWL George Morgan.
4th of JULY PARADE
Mark your calendars for the Lebanon Parade. July 4th. Plan to be in town and parked by 8:00 AM, this year. Once again CRA will help to organize and line up the floats and antique cars. We are there to provide emergency communications. The event gives us a chance to practice our skills in emergency communications, and at the same time have a lot of fun. If you have not worked this event before, you really owe it to yourself to come out and participate. The Parade is one of the biggest in Central New Jersey. After the parade is over, we all get together for a root beer and a hot dog or two.
The event is July 4th in Lebanon, New Jersey. Plan to be there at 8:00 A.M. and plan to stay until about 1:00 P.M. It might be a good idea to bring a hat to keep the sun off your head, and a bottle of water. CRA members will be assigned a division of the parade to help line up and report status on who is ready and who is missing. We also keep an eye out safety issues, and report on them as well. I hope to see you there!
Tim McLaughlin N2UVY
See you all at
Field Day 2000!
SOLAR MAX
As we near the peak of the current sunspot cycle, solar flux has been hitting numbers as high as 252 in the last few weeks. The Aurora Borealis / northern lights have been seen as far south as Oklahoma! DX conditions are great, although geomagnetic storms have raised the K index often into the teens and as high as the 70s recently. So, propagation can vary greatly every few days. Tune up and listen often!
On that note, hopefully many of you have worked the most recent Dxpedition to Bhutan, A5. Check for your call in their log at http://www.qsl.net/bhutan2000
Good luck in the pileups
