W0ZS

In the spring of 1946 I first became W2POY just before my 15th birthday. In those days there were only two classes of Amateur Radio license, Class B and Class A. Class B was primarily a C.W. ticket and Class A was the 'Phone' privilege license. I became an avid C.W. enthusiast mainly because I could not afford to build a phone station. My W2POY license expired while serving as a radioman 2nd class in the U.S. Navy, 1951-1955. I did not renew my license until February 1977 because my interests had shifted toward career and family. Amazingly, I could still copy code at 26 w.p.m. after all those years. I took the Novice, General, Advanced and Extra exams in a single morning at the FCC office in Denver. I became WD0AYF located in Lakewood, Colorado. Shortly thereafter I applied for an 'Extra Class' callsign and was assigned W0ZS. I moved to California in October, 1978. In 1979 I changed my call again to KV6M. This turned out to be a BIG mistake. About 50% of DX stations came back to K4BM forcing me to repeat KV6M over and over again. When the vanity call program came into effect for extra class stations I requested and got my old W0ZS call back. Presently the station is located in Potrero, California which is 42 miles east of San Diego and right on the border between Mexico and the United States. The altitude is 2400 feet above sea level.
