~~ User Guide for RYLogit - Version 4.8.7 or later ~~
A logging program for General purpose and Contesting
with scoring functions for the IBM QSO Party
The default installation location is C:\HamRadio\RYLogit.
You may use another folder if so desired. ALL files from the
installation must reside in the same folder. Use this folder as
the target of program and database updates.
NOTE: Downloading
and installation of the WWHAM Database
to the same folder as RYLogit is required
for the IBM QSO Party only.
It is OK to install the WWHAM DB before installing RYLogit.
To Uninstall, use Control Panel "Add/Remove Programs" to remove
the RYLogit program and data files from your Hard Drive. New
Log files that you have created will not be removed. They can be
removed with "Explorer" if so desired. Version 4.03 or earlier of RYLogit
does not
have
an
entry in the Registry. In this case use Explorer to remove
all or selected files.
Your PC must be set to the correct "Regional Settings" and
local time zone
and time for your QTH.
Call letters and QTH info about IBM Hams are in the WWHAM
Callsign Database.
Individuals that previously worked for IBM and left before retiring
may or may not be in the
WWHAM database. If a Call is not
found in the WWHAM, the
IBM check-box will remain
turned off. More info on this later.
SETTINGS
The first time you start the program you will be prompted
to enter some
information pertaining to your station for
the "Settings". First,
Enter the Log Name. This name
will be used in the Title of the
Main window,
the name
of the Log File Folder which contains the
actual Log
database, and headers for the Printed and
Exported file(s).
Example naming convention would
be like:
"2004 IBM QP SSB" (without the quotes).
After creating a Log File, click the down arrow to the
right of the Log Name
field. Select Log you wish to use
with a
single click of the mouse. If there is only
one Log File in the drop down list, click on it.
Next, select the Type of Log.
Enter your Call Letters and TAB out of the field.
A field for your Name and State is provided and
is used by the NA QSO Party.
Some contests
require the ITU/CQ Zone as part of the exchange.
A field is provided for your Zone as it pertains to
the contest. This Zone number
will be appended
to the RS(T) Sent field for the CQ WW DX contest, and be
part
of the exported record and appear in the printed log.
There is also a field for transmitter ID number (XmtrID) as
it may apply to some
contests. The ID will be part of the
exported record and appear in the printed log.
Insure that Continent and Country are filled in.
Defaults are checked for Contest mode
and the
IBM QSO Party. You may
change these as
desired. Indicate if this log is intended for a Contest with the
check box. Contest type "Other" may be used for
CQ World-Wide WPX and
others that have similar
exchange and Cabrillo output formats.
Click "Save and Close" in order for the info that you
just entered to be retained.
You may re-enter the Settings function from the main screen at any time.
To create another Log File, click Create Log.
To change to another Log File, click the down arrow
in the Log Name field
and then single click on the
name of the Log you wish to use.
Note that Empty the Log will erase ALL entries in
the current log file being displayed. Comes in
handy if you are doing
some
Log testing (practice).
SLASH ZERO:
Check the box if you want to display a slashed zero in a Call letter field.
A slashed zero may not be available in your PC character mapping if you are
outside of the USA. This option was added at version 4.83.
Logs containing contacts with stations having a zero in their call letters created
from a previous version can not be converted to a regular zero.
The following is in regards to the IBM QSO Party:
If you are operating out of the District for your
call letters do not use the
designator slash "/". There
are NO calls in the WWHAM with this designator.
If your Call is in the WWHAM database, the Continent
and Country fields will be
filled in. It is very important that correct spelling and designations
be used for your
Country and Continent if you are manually
entering data for those fields. The data in
the WWHAM
is what other stations will be using when they work you.
The program "scoring" function depends upon this for a
comparison against Countries/Continents worked.
To completely remove folders created for logging
you must Exit RYLogit and
proceed to use "Explorer" to
delete the Log Folder(s) from your default installation
directory. Caution: Before doing a "delete", switch
to Log File in the "Settings" that
is not going to be deleted at this time.
DATA ENTRY
Some of the data entry fields and all buttons on the main
screen have a
pop-up Hint. Place the mouse over a button
or data entry field for a few seconds.
After entering the appropriate data in a field, use the
TAB key to proceed to the
next field.
MANUAL ENTRY
If you would like to transfer data from a previously completed
paper log, you may
select "Manual Entry". This
implies that
you maintain the DATE and TIME for each entry.
Date Format: yyyy-mm-dd
The Date will appear for every entry until you change it.
To use the PC clock, select "Auto Entry" (default) and
current UTC DATE and
TIME will be used. Each log entry
will automatically contain the
current (UTC) date and time .
If for some reason the data you entered in the log
file
becomes "corrupted"
(perhaps due to a power
outage
while using the program). You may restore
your log
from the Backup. Entered from the "Settings"
screen
at any time.
Click "Save settings" to keep the data you have entered
or changed. You can
change the "Settings" by it's
selection
from the main screen.
MAIN DATA ENTRY SCREEN
Mode: Clicking the "down arrow" displays a list of Modes to
choose from.
Choose from one of the Modes in the list.
Frequency (Freq): Clicking the "down arrow" displays a list
of Frequencies to choose from.
In contest mode the Frequency, Call letters, and Mode are
used to search for a
duplicate
contact after all have been
entered and you
TAB out of the "Call" field. Note Messages
at bottom of screen
after tabbing out of the Call letters field.
If the Call entered is NOT a duplicate contact, a search is made
First in the
WWHAM. Second, if the station was worked on
another band,
the information
from the Log file is used to fill the
Name, City, State, Country, Continent, & Status fields.
If the station is NOT an IBM contact, the appropriate
check box should not contain
a check mark. The
contact will be entered in the log and scored as
Non-IBM.
As mentioned above. There are NO call letters
in the WWHAM containing the
"/" designation. For example: W1ABC in the WWHAM with a
State of FL and
USA2 Country. If the individual
identifies as W1ABC/4 and that is what you enter,
there would be nothing found in the WWHAM.
For a station NOT found in WWHAM and NOT a
U.S. contact and NOT already in
the Log, fill in the
Country and Continent values. If it is a U.S. contact
fill in the State.
Please use the 2 letter abbreviation for
Continent: AF / AN / AS / EU / NA / OC / SA .
Clicking the "down arrow" opens a list of Continents
to choose from.
The spelling used for a Country must be consistent
throughout the contest.
Blank entries not allowed. The DXCC List is used for country naming conventions.
Therefore, the State of Hawaii ( HI ) is in the Country of Hawaii
and not the USA.
As mentioned before, the Check box is not
checked if there is no WWHAM or
previous Log entry
match. You can turn the check box
back on if it is
discovered that this is an IBM station. This must be done BEFORE you "Add to Log".
If the contact is for a U.S. State and the correct
U.S. State 2 letter abbreviation
is entered,
the Country (USA1-4) and Continent fields will be
filled in
when you
TAB out of the State field. Clicking the
"down arrow" opens a list of U.S. States
to choose from. You can click on the desired state
or if you type the
first letter of
a State and use the
up or down arrow
keys you can scroll through the
State list without
opening the drop down list. Either way, Tab out
of the State field after the selection.
In addition to using the mouse, you can change the Check Box field by use of F11.
The keyboard Enter key is the same as clicking
on "Add to Log".
The cursor will be returned to the
Call field after the log entry is made. If you change
to another Band on your rig and make a contact there,
remember to change the
Frequency field of RYLogit.
The keyboard F8 key is the same as clicking on "Clear".
Clear is used to erase data
entry fields except Date,
Mode, Number Sent. Clear will also Un-Check
both check
boxes and position the cursor on
the Call field. Any data in the entry fields will not be
saved to the log when Clear is selected.
Clicking the "View Multipliers" will display a list of
contacts sorted by Frequency
that indicates the
QSO #, Call, Freq., and Country that created a
new multiplier.
When you "Add to Log" a new
Multiplier, the text on the "View Multipliers" button
will change to "New Multiplier" in Green for 3 seconds.
If you are in non-contest mode, entering a Call will
check to see if you have worked
the station previously
and produce a message in the Status window at the
bottom of
the screen if you have worked this station before. This is not an error.
The list of Log entries will have a
pointer on the previous
contact or at the first contact of
a group if there were
more than one with this station.
Also, in non-contest mode
there is a Comments field and
a field to enter the
Ending Time
of the QSO.
If End Time (ETime) is not filled in, the "Add to Log"
function
will insert the
current
UTC time.
Not all fields displayed
are
used by all contests. Tab across
any fields not required or
"Add to
Log"
if you have sufficient
contact information entered.
The WW DX contests require "Zone"
to
be appended to the RST. Selecting the
WW DX type in
Settings will expand
the RST field for inclusion of the Zone and
provide a unique
export file. Selecting NA QP will provide a unique export file
for
this Contest type.
The "NA SPRINT/WW WPX/Other" contest category will include
fields required for
these Contests. Fields not used may remain empty during data entry.
CITY, COUNTRY, &
CONTINENT will
not be Exported. If these fields have data
in
them it will not
appear in the Exported output file.
Leave the RST
fields blank during contest data entry for
NA SPRINT exported output format.
If the RST Sent and RST Rcvd is non-blank, the exported
output record will
be WPX format.
Some
contests have specific exchange information required
that have not been
provided for in this logging program. You
may choose to enter that info in one of
the unused fields,
like
Name for example.
Refer to http://www.kkn.net/~trey/cabrillo/qso-template.html
to
obtain correct formatting
for "Other" type contests not mentioned
here.
You may Exit the program at any time. If you have started a
Log entry that you wish
to keep, be sure
to Save it with the
"Add to Log" or discard it with
the "Clear" before
Exiting if you do not wish to keep.
The next time the program
is started the sequence number
is set to one
greater than
the last log entry.
A scrollable Grid displays the Log contents of most fields.
A count of the number of IBM contacts and Non-IBM
contacts is displayed.
To notify you when the Non-IBM
contacts are greater than the number of IBM contacts,
the field color will turn RED. The printed and exported log
will contain a contact point
of 0 for non-IBM stations that
exceed the number of IBM stations. The Non-IBM
contacts are
not figured into the score unless they are equal to or less
than the
number of IBM contacts.
EDIT (updated @ version 4.9.0.0)
Click "Edit the Log" button to enter the EDIT function.
There are Search buttons to
assist you in finding a particular
log entry. Function key F3 is the same as clicking on
CALL Search. Function key F4 is the same as clicking
on
S Nr Search (Search for a Sent Number).
There is a Navigation bar above the Log that assists you
to scroll through the Log and
jump from one end of the
log and
back again. Placing the mouse over the various
Navigator
buttons produces a
Hint as to their function. Do this to become familiar with the function
of each button.
You may EDIT the contents of the log
except for the
Sequence Number sent. You can not
Insert
new entries using the EDIT function.
You may Delete an entire entry in the log by first selecting the entry with a
mouse click on the
row of a record that you want to remove and then click the Delete button
on the Navigator.
Deletions are immediate and permanent after you respond to the Yes
prompt.
Deletion will create a gap in the sequence numbers that were used to send to the
other stations
in a contest. This does not affect the scoring since that is based
upon valid contacts and the
sequence number that you sent to the other station for that contact remains
valid. Also,
after any Deletion(s), the current sequence number will not correspond to the
number of
contacts made. Don't worry about it!
To Edit a field in the Log, click the mouse on the desired
cell and then press the
Enter or F2 key. You may use
the Tab key to jump from one field to the next.
The IBM field is type boolean and the correct entry is either True or
False for that field.
Use the Drop Down arrow where ever it is present and make the selection.
Upon completion of Editing the desired fields for a given
contact, click on the
Navigator button designated with a
"check" mark to SAVE the changes you have
made. Also, there is a button available to CANCEL your changes.
There is no "Undo" button so be careful of what is being
changed. You can always
go back to Edit the same entry
again if need be.
When finished click on the CLOSE button or
depress the F9 Key on the keyboard.
You will be asked about remembering to click the SAVE Change(s) button in
case you
made a change to the contents of a field(s).
YOU are responsible for the changes you make to the
log entries
in Edit mode.
Upon Exit from the Edit function the Score is re-computed
based upon what is in the Log
for
the IBM QP. If
you change the
spelling of a Country
(including the Case) that is
inconsistent with other
log
entries, it can produce
an erroneous score.
EXPORT
You may Print or Export to File log data at any time.
There are various Sort options. Select the Output Sort Order
before
selecting the
Output Format. If you wish, you may
Print and/or Export in all Sort orders.
If you wish to look at the content of the Exported file,
the name of the file is
displayed at the time of Export. Part of the file name will be your call letters
and the
contest info that you entered in "Settings". The letters
"CS", "FC", or "CD" appended to the name of the file
indicate
the Sort order used.
CS = Sorted by contact
sequence.
FC = Sorted by Freq, Continent, Country, State, & Call.
CD = Sorted by Call, Date, Time.
A File ends with ".txt" (Cabrillo) or ".csv"
(Comma Separated Value).
Only the IBM QSO Party exports the "csv", all other
Log types will be "txt".
At the end of the contest these files can be edited
with your favorite
text editor to add
your Name
and/or EMail information. (I recommend the use of EditPad or NoteTab.
Both
available free. Check my WEB page for the Link
to where you can download
these
very nice text
editors.)
Changing the contact information in the exported file(s) does not change
the
contents of the Log database. The Export files are derived from the log database.
Not all Contests require the same Exchange information.
Contest "Types" in Settings will have exported data
unique to that contest type.
Some contests will fit
into the "Other" category. In this case you may have
to
Edit out certain fields such as RST
if the contest does
not require them or Add
some fixed data that is not
Exported.
Log data from RYLogit may be transferred to another
logging program via
the Amateur Data Interchange Format
(ADIF). I have written a program to
Export RYLogit data to ADIF. "ADIFConvert" is available as a download
on the RYLogit
web page. ADIF files may be uploaded to eQSL or the ARRL
online log book.
Using HAMSCOPE (version 1.55 or later) Digital
Communications Program
It is preferred that you start HamScope first.
Start HamScope and Select "Settings" - General Setup. Select
RYLogit for
the name of the Log program. Fill in the Path to Log Pgm and click OK.
If HamScope asks if you want to start the logger, say NO.
Double Click your ICON to start RYLogit.
Click the RYLogit "Conn to HamScope" button to connect with
HamScope.
The text on the button will change to "Disc from HamScope"
(Disconnect from HamScope)
when the connection
is made. If the connection is made,
clicking this Button again will
Disconnect RYLogit
from HamScope.
Communications are from HamScope to RYLogit for the
Mode, Call, Name,
RST Received, Sequence Number
Received, City, State, Country, and
Continent data fields.
If you are using the Rig Control feature in HamScope, the Frequency
of your
Radio is sent to RYLogit and the RYLogit Freq will change
according to the Band.
The Sequence Number Sent generated in RYLogit is sent
to HamScope
when the HamScope user enters the Call and
Tabs out of the Call field.
If this is a Duplicate contact
(Contest mode of use), the word "Duplicate" will
appear in the
HamScope
Name field
and the Sequence Number that
HamScope
receives
will
be "000". If this is a new contact
and the Call is found in
the IBM WWHAM database or
the
station was worked on
another band (already in the log),
the Name field will be
auto-filled.
RYLogit will accept RST Received, Sequence Number
Received, City,
State, Country, and Continent
from HamScope
when the user hi-lights and
right clicks one of those fields in the
HamScope receive window and makes a
selection from the
options menu. Just one field at a time with this method may be
sent to RYLogit.
The "EXTMAC" Macro in HamScope is used to transmit the
Sequence Number Sent.
An example HamScope Macro used to send to the remote operator:
<TX><CALL> DE <MYCALL> UR <RST> <EXTMAC> K <RX>
Please refer to HamScope "Help" for further information.
RYLogit will attempt an "Add to Log" when the HamScope
user clicks the
"Logit" button.
If the "Add to Log" is
successful
the Call and Name fields will
be set to blanks.
If this does not
happen, check the RYLogit screen for possible error message.
The HamScope "Clear" button will also Clear fields in RYLogit.
Currently, HamScope may be downloaded at:
