Program for 6/18/2006: Mobile Installations

Many hams have radios in their vehicles. During this evening's informal program, the club members shared the details of their various mobile installations.

Bill WA0CBW

Photo 1: Bill WA0CBW shows how he has routed the wiring in the engine bay. (Note the extra 'speed hole' on the front valve cover -- that helps Bill get to the Fox quickly during transmitter hunts. His mobile Doppler system helps, too.) Bill runs VHF and HF mobile.

Patrick KC0VQL J-Pole Antenna

Photo 2: Patrick, KC0VQL, demonstrates a portable J-pole antenna for 2m that he recently constructed. It's built with a telescoping handle that extends to more than 7' long. Click here to listen (122k, .MP3)

Motorcycle APRS: KC0BS

Photo 4: Brian ("Shorty"), KC0BS, is not only an architect of many midwest repeater systems, but also runs APRS on his Honda Gold Wing. A Toshiba laptop is mounted on atop the 'fuel tank' (not really a fuel tank on a Wing.)

Photo 5: Another view of the mobile set up of KC0BS. You can see the VHF antenna and GPS antenna on the rack of the Gold Wing. This would not be possible on an Indian!

W0DEW Toaster-Oven Mobile

Photo 6: Don, W0DEW, uses a toaster oven to stabilize his crystal oscillator while mobile. He says it's also great for dealing with deliberate QRM'ers.
