Foxhunt - August 11, 2006

On August 11, JCRAC held a foxhunt. In a foxhunt, competitors search for a hidden transmitter. Acting as the fox was Jacob, KCØVOS. The first team "caught" the fox in about 30 minutes. The "Doppler guys" of course showed up on the scene, but they don't really count! :)

So who won this foxhunt? Haven't got a clue, maybe someone will fess up!

Jacob, KCØVOS -- The wiley fox

Photo 1: Jacob, KCØVOS, acted as the "fox," providing a signal for the hunters to track and some entertainment as well!

Larry, Doug, Bill

Photo 2: Larry KCØSKS, Doug, KCØVQN, and Bill WAØCBW recount the "chase." Bill: Right 'thare, when I heard that thump, I knew that someone was gonna be missing their dog! Then I looked right and THERE WAS THE FOX!

Photo 3: Kyle, WQØG, was one of the first to arrive at the scene. He used signal strength to track the fox, employing the "stubby antenna" trick often used by WØDEW.

Stubby antenna

Photo 4: This is the "stubby antenna" used by Kyle, WQØG. It's a simple bit of wire inserted into the antenna connector on an HT. It's very effective for close-in work. If you can hear the fox with the wire removed from the antenna connector, you're very close -- be careful that the fox doesn't bite you!

Matt KCØRXW

Photo 5: Matt, KCØRXW and Jay, KCØRXX (not pictured) both found the fox. However, you can see that Matt has his mind on dessert at this point. (Get it ... mmmmm, 3.14159 ... ok forget it.)

Dick & Kay

Photo 6: Dick, NOØT, and Kay, WA5DYC used signal strength to find the fox. Dick is holding a variable RF "step attenuator" which is the gold cylinder with the black knob atop. This device weakens signals passing through it, which is handy when closing in on the fox.
