30-50 MHz  1967-1979 (from notes and my VUD VHF Utility DX column reports)

This is mainly a retrospective from decades ago and NOT meant to be a current
guide to 30-50 MHz occupants (newer such lists can be found elsewhere on the
Web by VK3OT et al.)  Some prominent signals (the French and BBC Band I
TV) have been gone since the mid 1980s, while many low-VHF 2x public safety
agencies have moved to trunked UHF systems.  Other (more-identifiable)
broadcast services have emerged in that part of the spectrum (notably the
several 47-49 MHz Chilean FM music stations running up to a few kw with
well-located antenna systems - http://www.qsl.net/ce3sad/6m.html).

The Patrolman used a 10.7-MHz i.f. so images were not the problems that
they became on the Allied A-2586 with its 4.5-MHz i.f. (the mess at 27-MHz
was clearly audible up at 36 MHz, and WWV-25 at 34 MHz, etc).  Also, if a
long enough antenna were used on the Allied direct 4.5-MHz signal feed into
the i.f. would become apparent.  ("parked" jammers in the 10-MHz region were
never noticed entering the Patrolman's i.f.)

The selectivity of the sets used before the SP-600 was broad (e.g., the
33-MHz US fire departments were like "low", "mid", and "high" and the 35 and
43-MHz pager sets of two frequencies could just be determined).  The SX-62
used the same 10.7-MHz i.f. strip for 30-50 MHz as it did for 88-108 MHz!
Any twidling with its i.f. xfrmr cans to optimize one band would mess up the
other.  That set was used primarily for FM-DXing 1973-79 at the tradeoff of
poorer selectivity on 30-50 MHz (which when trying to determine the F2 MUF
isn't always such a bad thing).  The selectivity of the SP-600 (AM) was jaw-
dropping in comparison - especially in separating the many 33-MHz US fire
department channels (which had previously been rather jumbled together).

It was only with the later SP-600 and Bearcat that the profound differences
between AM and FM could be noted (needed to slope-detect FM on SP-600 while
the Bearcat was pretty deaf to AM audio).  The freqs measured 1974-79 served
well to later program the scanner.

This list just covers the first few months of use of the Bearcat (only 10
pogrammable channels) when it was still in much of a learning curve.  It also
suffered from images in that the local oscillator for its 10.8-MHz i.f. ran
lower than the tuned so that the 2nd harmonic when tuned to the 33-MHz band
would beat against 35-MHz signals and reproduce them as well (.e.g., 33.93
makes l.o. 23.13, and 46.26 to beat with 35.46 <mobile phone> and appear there
too).  This "problem" was known for well over a year before I got a unit.  Due
to this (and other "birdies" - this was well before CPUs were widely used in
many appliances) the Search mode was of limited value.  The unit failed (power
supply ?) in c. Sept 1981 and a 16-channel 210XL replaced it (lasting to early
1987) followed by a 175-XL (keyboard failure in Feb 1999) and the current
PRO-2048. Due to health reasons, I quit my VUD Column editorship in early 1981
after over 10 years at it.
