3Y0PI Peter I Island

This was one of the biggest DX operations of the decade. It took years of planning and huge sums of money to mount a DXpedition to Peter I Island, an antarctic island which is probably one of the most isolated locations on earth.

The story of the DXpedition was presented in an excellent book by Bob Schmieder, KK6EK.

I probably spent 20 hours in the pileups before I got my first 3Y0PI QSO, using an FT101E with only 4 kHz split - I had to spin the dial back and forth to manage the 25 kHz split they were using! Another 15 hours of calling netted me a second QSO.

I got lucky on one of the last days of their operation. They had taken down all their equipment except the 10 meter station. Bob KK6EK was operating during what he described in his book as a pipeline into the Midwest USA. I worked them on 10 meter SSB. Several friends told me they had already shut down and that I had worked a pirate. I sent for the card anyway. It obviously wasn't a pirate!
