Home Brew - The real amateur's thrill

Dxing is half the fun of Amateur Radio.
Home brew gear adds the rest to this fine art.

Have you ever built a piece of amateur equipment? Or you don't know any thing about circuits, so you just hold the PTT switch calling CQ...CQ..CQ DX....? If this description fits you, at least half the thrill of being a HAM has eluded you! Almost for everyone of the greatest excitement in amateur radio come from building and using our own transmitter. We will have a special feeling connected in telling the other guy or gal "The rig I am using here is a home brew". Or the way a smile that steels onto your face when a DX station gives a 59 report for your homebrew.

To make the above statement over the air, We need not to have the college degrees in Engineering to conduct experiments. We just assemble some suggested circuits, test them, learn their characteristics, finally make any necessary changes and observe the results. Many of our early inventors followed this approach, which supports the validity of the precept" Learn by doing." We amateurs have the greatest advantage over a professional workman to try all our ideas at home rather than at rvl.qth. We don't have any limited schedules to finish our job. If our time and health permits we can sit on this hot seat implementing all the worst ideas that strikes our mind all over the day and finally watch the results. That's what I am doing.

SELECTING A PROJECT:

If you are interested in home brewing but haven't done much, I would suggest QRP circuit as a good first project. They usually consist of a few components. The layout will not be practically critical. After you've put together a bit or two, it'll be a piece of cake to move on to bigger and better projects.

CIRCUIT GATHERING:

In the present condition, we VU hams are blessed with plenty of circuits. Many Amateur Radio societies encourage the upcoming hams & $WL$ with their publications. Many of our Indian electronics magazines are also giving an important place to this wonderful hobby. Finally Internet the Hi Tech media is a place you can get various types of circuits from all over the world. Even you can download the complete datasheets of various Its, Transistors ...etc you are looking for :

COMPONENTS:
Collection of the components plays a great role to every experimenter. Parts and materials never appear magically! We may daydream until doomsday, but that won't yield results. We must also innovate as the demand dictates. Each time when you watch for some of the smaller display ads in various publications, you monitor the classified ads. That is the place where you'll often see information that led to a free catalog of bargain components. It is a practice recommended to all of you who enjoy building their own equipment. All you need is some ambition and a few postage stamps to equip yourself with the means to get the parts highlighted here. Unfortunately some of the suppliers specify a list a minimum order. In such instances, it is sometime convenient to pool our order with those of other hams in our area. This practice of bulk/group purchasin§ the components may put down the component price finally our project price.

SAFETY:
Having a good attitude about safety is not enough. We must be knowledgeable about common safety guidelines and follow them faithfully. Safety guidelines cannot possibly cover all situations, but if we approach each task with a measure of common sense, we should be able to work safely. Remember: There is no substitute for common sense. Since Amateur Radio began, building equipment in home workshops has been a major part of an amateur's activity. Building your own gear need not be hazards, learn how to perform the necessary functions and follow the safe practices. With a little patience and a little hard work we can do, things that most people cannot. Finally, we can build our own equipment and can use it to talk to other people in the next town, across the globe or even in outer space without wires or any other intermediates. Perhaps most important, we have friends all over the world, even we haven't yet met them in person...Hi! ..................... SASI, VU3ELR
