What is the minimum
qualification to become a ham?
No educational qualification is specified to become a ham. Anybody
who has attained 12 years of age can become a ham radio operator after
passing the Amateur Station Operator's Certificate (ASOC) Examination
conducted by the Ministry of Communications, Govt. of India. You have to
send a "Birth Certificate" or the "High School
Leaving Certificate" (which mentions your date-of-birth) as a proof of your
age. There are four different grades of Amateur Wireless Telegraph Station Licence.
-Those between the age group of 14-18 years can apply for Grade-I,
Grade-II, Restricted Grade or a Short Wave Listener's licence (listening to the
ham radio operators without this licence is considered illegal!).
-Those between the age group of 12-14 years can apply for
Grade-II, Restricted Grade or a Short Wave Listener's Licence.
-The application for the grant of such licences should be accompanied by a certificate
from the head of the educational institution recognized by a board or university in India,
attended by the applicant or from his legal guardian that the applicant is interested in
and is competent to conduct experiment in wireless communication.
