You need a licence

In most countries, the Amateur Service is controlled by their Telecommunication Administration. The general rules for the conduct of all Radio Stations, including those in amateur service, are laid down by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). In India, it is illegal and punishable to possess wireless equipment without a proper license. To get a ham license, one has to pass the Amateur Station Operators Certificate (ASOC) Examination, conducted by the Ministry of Communications, Government of India, through their Monitoring Stations situated in various parts of the country.

At present there are four grades of Amateur Wireless Telegraph Station Licenses and one receiving license available in our country. They are advanced, Grade I, Grade II, Restricted Class Amateur Wireless Telegraph Station licenses and Short Wave Listeners (SWL) License. With the SWL License you can possess only a Communications Receiver. But with the other four, you can possess and operate a transmitting and receiving setup. While Grade I license is available to those who have completed 14 years, Grade II, Restricted class and SWL Licenses shall be granted to those who have completed 12 years. For Advanced Grade , the minimum age requirement is 18 years. The fee is Rs. 50/- for Advanced, Rs. 40/- for Grade I and Rs. 25/- each for Grade II, Restricted Class and SWL Licenses for two years.
