A679-J
Built by STC in Sydney during WW2 the A679-J is a shipboard HF communications receiver.
COMMENTARY
This receiver is a part of the A679 family, the A679-J being capable of interfacing to a DF loop. The receiver was also used by the American forces as the AMR300.
The receiver is a single conversion superheterodyne circuit. All valves are 6 series octal types (apart from the rectifier).
The receiver is quite flexible compared to many receivers of the time. All coils are contained in the receiver and are selected by the band switch. The frequency dial is nicely weighted, and fair precision is possible, although there is no crystal calibrator. A crystal position is available for fixed frequency operation. There are Audio and RF gain controls as well as an aerial vernier. AVC may be disabled. BFO note is variable. A meter is provided for carrier level indication.
My unit is not operational yet, but I cannot see any reason why this receiver would not be great for ham use. BFO controls are flexible enough to allow SSB reception.
