GABO ISLAND DX-PEDITION

26-30 SEPTEMBER 2001

Paul, vk3dk, and a group of radio amateurs headed for Gabo Island off the East coast of Victoria, Australia to activate the island for IOTA and Lighthouse chasers. This is one of those DX-peditions that started out as a short holiday and which has developed into a mini dx-pedition. Applications have been submitted to IOTA and WLH for recognition of the activation. Gabo Island is in the VK3 call area so they used Paul's callsign, VK3DK/p as the primary call.

Gabo is famous as the entry to Bass Strait, that treacherous body of water that lies between the Australian mainland and Tasmania and which has claimed numerous lives, especially yachtsmen. Gabo has provided shelter for many a mariner during adverse weather. Further history and photos can be found here.

A full report including photos will appear on this site in the near future as will details of the next activation. Hopefully this will be to a location which in amateur terms, is more sought after than Gabo. Keep checking back here for further information.

The lighthouse is made of red granite which was quarried from the rock around the base of the lighthouse.
The background in this photo is the Victorian coast which is separated from the island by a channel of less than a kilometer.
