VK6 PICTURE GALLERY

We finally made it over to VK6 on the 1st January 2004. The trip was via the Eyre Peninsula in VK5. On the Eyre Peninsla and area we visited Port Lincon, Coffin Bay, Streaky Bay, Ceduna, Cactus Beach and Fowlers Bay & bush camped on the Nullabor

In VK6 we headed to Esperance but were unable to visit Capes Legrand or Arid due to wet weather. We visited Kalgoorlie but the highlight was a stay at the Eyre Bird Observatory

Perth, located in the south west corner of Western Australia, is the capital city of Western Australia. Being such a large state, VK6 offers much to the conventional and four wheel drive traveler.

Amongst other areas, Nan and I would like to visit the Kimberley region in the North West. This area was first charted by Europeans in the 1600s.

VK6 is so big that getting there is an adventure in itself. Therefore a lot of time should be set aside. Major treks include the 1600 Km long Canning Stock Route and the Gunbarrel Highway. Along with many other roads in outback West and South Australia, the "Gunbarrel" was built by the late Len Beadell and the "Gunbarrel Road Construction Party, so named because the roads that they built were as straight as a gunbarrel. The purpose of these roads was for survey purposes related to the Woomera Rocket Range and the atomic tests at Emu and Maralinga.

Len Beadell has documented his construction work in his books, Too Long in the Bush, Blast the Bush, Bush Bashers, Still in the Bush, Beating About the Bush, Outback Highways (a selection) and End of an Era. The Australian Geographic Society's book "The Kimberley" by David McGonigal provides an excellent reference for the Kimberley region.
