Emma & Chloe's Technical Tips. Trust a CAT to find the simplest fixes for common problems.

Got a VCO problem with your FM900? No need to remove the VCO block! Just heat up the underside of the block whilst still installed with a big (120 watt Weller) iron until you can get a good solder flow on the opposite surface. This will re-flow the solder back on to the existing circuit board! You may need to adjust the VCO voltage.

Trouble receiving packets with your Baycom Modem. Make sure the  connection lead between the modem & serial port is as short as it can possibly be!

Emma recently had trouble with her VK Power mate 25 power supply. After a complete rebuild, the over voltage crow bar circuit was operating  erratically. Sometimes, even turning the power supply on would cause the crowbar SCR to fire. The solution was to not only install by-pass capacitors across the supply output but also to fit a 25 volt, 100 microfard electrolytic  capacitor across the gate and the -ve of the SCR. No more problems. Email me if power supply details are required. All our home brew supplies are fitted with 50 amp high surge current bridge rectifiers

Chloe found that when using the IC706 in the work van on 20 metres that it would shut itself down. The solution was to wrap the remote head control cable around a ferrite rod to choke the RF from getting into the radio. RF chokes were also fitted to all cables connected to the Codan 8528 in the Landcruiser.
