Lighthouse Weekend 2011

VK2MB/LH at Barrenjoey...

As an experiment for this year's Lighthouse and Lightship weekend, we're running a video link from our portable station at Barrenjoey Lighthouse, at Palm Beach in northern Sydney. Find us on APRS.

Every 15 minutes, a small 3G-connected camera will upload snapshots of the operations at Barrenjoey for your viewing pleasure.

Check out our Twitter feed for any important updates as the weekend progresses, and view the Lighthouse 2011 page in the club blog.

We'll also be creating a time-lapse movie of the weekend's operations; this will be available on this page later on.

Also check out some of the photos and video of our previous activations of this beautiful lighthouse.

MWRS "Aeronautical Division"

In what has become a club tradition, Yves VK2AUJ planned to fly a helicopter—a brand-new Guimbal Cabri (one of only two in Australia)—around the lighthouse about midday on Sunday. The weather was against him, but XYL Connie VK2CON did her party piece: an aerobatics display in a Pitts Special!

Acknowledgements

Many thanks to the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service and the volunteers at Chase Alive for facilitating access to the lighthouse.

Operating Schedule:

VK2MB/LH was active at approximately the following times:

Local (Australian Eastern Standard Time):

  1. 20 Aug 10.00am - 5.00pm

  2. 21 Aug 9.00am - 3.00pm

UTC:

  1. 20 Aug 0000 - 20 Aug 0700

  2. 20 Aug 2300 - 21 Aug 0500

While we would have liked to operate right throughout the weekend, we did not have permission to stay inside the lighthouse keeper's cottage overnight, and it gets very cold outside after dark (it's winter in Sydney, after all!) Maybe next year...

Thanks to Ben VK2BEN at ec-X for the use of the 3G webcam!
