In the mid 1920's AWA manufactured Reiss microphones using a solid marble housing and supplied them to the broadcast stations that it sold and managed. (see A.W.A. Reiss Microphones)

In November 1932 the Australian radio magazine RADIO MONTHLY presented a do-it-yourself article for amateur radio operators to build their own version. That article is set out below. The magazine lists either marble or maple as suitable housing materials.
