This great circle plot is centred on the VE6WZ QTH.

Our path to EU is usually through the Aurora oval which forms a ring around the North Pole.

Direct (short path) openings are difficult on 80 and 160m ... especially during the high sunspot cycle.  Long path openings to EU are easier and more reliable on 80m.

At left is a screen shot from DXAtlas showing the polar, short-path route to Germany from VE6WZ.  The Aurora zone (shown in white) is depicting a K index of 2. This why from the west coast NA hearing EU on 160m is quite uncommon.  During the high sunspot years in VE6, there may be only 1 or 2 nights a season when EU will be heard on 160.
