I am an active member of the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society, a group of fine folks who combine a love of Lighthouses and Amateur Radio. Members setup and operate portable stations from various Lighthouses around the world (thus "Activating" these Lights) and other members talk to them and exchange QSL cards with them to confirm the contacts to qualify for various awards.
This page documents some of the Lighthouse Activations that I have done .
This Light is located in Ottawa, ON on the grounds of the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology. It was originally located at Cape Race, NFLD and was there when Marconi built his first commerical Wireless station at Cape Race in 1904. The light was subsequently moved to Cape North, N.S. and then finally dismantled and moved to its current location where it watches over the corner of Lancaster Road and St Laurent Blvd in Ottawa, ON.
I operated stationary mobile for about an hour and a half running 25W SSB from a Kenwood TS-50 to a Buddzilla (14ft, Monster-sized) W3FF Buddistick mounted on the roof of my Subaru Forester with a well-grounded triple magnet mount. I setup on the side of the road a few hundred feet from the light and worked a couple of dozen stations. (If you look for the gigantic roof-mounted Santa Claus in both pictures you can figure out where I was in relation to the Lighthouse.)
