I think I am going to get one of these: http://www.halted.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/cgi-local/smpagegen.exe?U+scstore+knsp6015ff41a741+-c+scstore.cfg+-p+80610 Good grief! That is a LOOONG URL! Date: Sat, 29 Dec 2001 08:09:22 -0500 From: "Michael" Jeff, If you have a solder gun, the kind that looks like a gun and is at least 100 watts you can make one easy. Use a lenght of #12 solid wire, uninsulated and a fired handgun shell. Nine millimeter is deep enough but you could also use a .38. Might find one at a gunshop that does reloading or ask if they know someone that does that will give you one. Make sure the primer is still in the shell and that it has been fired! Take the shell casing and wrap the wire around it two or three times and put the ends in the solder gun so the shell is about 3 inches from the end of the solder gun. Set the gun down so the shell is upright and tie the trigger down. As it heats up add solder until it is full. Safety glasses might be a good idea incase of any splashes. There it is, a cheap solder pot the works fine. 73, Michael ++++++++++++++++ To: elecraft at mailman.qth.net Date: Sun, 30 Dec 2001 21:19:10 +0100 From: Jerry Bliss Subject: [Elecraft] Fw: Re: Solder pots - shell casing danger Let me add emphasis to Michael's comments below.... BE SURE TO USE A SPENT SHELL CASING... I.E. ONE THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN FIRED. True story.... In my youth and stupid days, I tried to fill a 22-cal empty shell with solder. I pried out the bullet and dumped out the powder. Then used my 100w soldering gun to melt solder into the now empty shell. Note that the primer had not been fired! (Can you see where I am going with this?) Well, thank goodness that it was a only 22-cal and not something bigger... Yes, the primer fired and I did get a face full of molten solder. I was not blinded, but I don't know why not. Lesson Learned! End of Story. Hi: The inexpensive solder pot I purchased is wonderful. It cleans the enamel coating and tins the lead in a fraction of a second. I just finished another K2. It works beautifully and all of the torroid leads are clean and shinny. Worth the $30 or so bucks. The added flux seems to accelerate the removal of the enamel and it assures the wire will be properly tinned. While it may seem to be a waste of solder, the result is a perfectly tinned lead every time without sanding or other preparation! Rick KC0OV +++++++++++++++++++
