That can be a bit of a problem with my Mandrake 9.0 as a lot of oldish ham stuff doesn't compile too well on it. I've found the suse RPM packages handy. They seem to install ok on my Mandrake 9.0 and Redhat 7.2 boxes. One thing to keep an eye on is the paths it uses. I had to make a new dir and a symlink once so a new package would fit in. There is a lot of ham software available as suse RPM's. I use ftp://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/suse/i386/8.1/suse/i586 to get p3dtelem-0.1-1.i386.rpm, but you might have something closer. I've conversed with several of you in different contexts, and I'm losing track of who is where. In December I had discussions on a couple of mailing lists and privately with several individuals about packet-based services, and about a trivial network database package I wrote for ham use. I posted a URL for the bare script at the time. I had enough inquiries about the beast that I decided to package it properly. So, trivnetdb version 1.0 is released. The package includes the program itself (somewhat enhanced since December), clear statement of license (GPL), and some documentation. The program requires perl and some assorted perl modules, and a perl DBI compliant database (e.g. MySQL), and runs on unix hosts. It can be obtained from: http://msuarc.egr.msu.edu/kb8zqz/packet/trivnetdb-1.0.tar.gz The file is quite small, about 22 kB. Trivnetdb is designed to be used for public service events like bike-a-thons, shelter operations, etc, though its capabilities obviously extend to other uses as well. Note: often times, when a box is compromised, the "script kiddies" neglect to trojan pstree to hide their tracks and thus, ps will lie to you but, pstree won't. /sbin/chkconfig --list | grep ":on " See what is starting when you boot the box. Sadly, we have yet to convince packagers that security is more important than "convenience" and thus, by default, many things that are NOT typically needed are loaded by default. You want to limit your potential exposure. You don't want potentially exploitable code running, especially when you don't use it for anything! (Your firewall - if you have one - is nifty but, my 'leet skillz are more nifty and I can still find your 'sploitable boxen!) netstat -lnp See what is listening, where it is listening. Once you get your box the way you want it, a "snapshot" of the output of those commands is a handy comparrison to check in the future if you suspect a compromise. Consider setting up iptables to further secure the box itself. As indicated in my signature, I do this for a living so, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me. 73 de John - K4WTF --- John Fraizer | High-Security Datacenter Services | President | Dedicated circuits 64k - 155M OC3 | EnterZone, Inc | Virtual, Dedicated, Colocation | http://www.enterzone.net/ | Network Consulting Services | +++++++++++++++++++++ From: T + J Williams 11:28 Subject: twcw - linux program to send CW To: 'Linux Hams' Hi, I just finished updating TWCW, a linux program to send CW. It was originally written for DOS but I have tested a Linux port of the program. I have already started work on changes to the program to make it a more general purpose QSO party logging program. I release this version now not because it's ready but because if I don't release it now, I will never release it. It's up to you to find all the bugs. :-) This is a rather extensive re-write as I have switched to using GTK+ 2 / Gnome 2. Consequently there are still some unimplemented features compared to v0.4.1. The most important new features are the port to GTK+ 2 / Gnome 2 and the new modems: MFSK8, (Q)PSK31, MT63 and FeldHell. FeldHell is RX only for now. I have previously written a Hellscreiber program for GTK+ 1.x but never released it. Now I need to figure out how to do the character rendering for TX in GTK+ 2. PSK31 and MT63 borrow a lot from other peoples code so they should work pretty well. However MT63 has no support for the extended features in Nino's program or MixW. MFSK8 seems to work but is pretty much untested. Bear in mind that this is very much work in progress. All bug reports, feature requests and contributed code is welcome, though I reserve the right to select what will make it to the next release... :) Last but not least there is the name issue. The program is not anymore a collection of various M-ary FSK modems, there are PSK, OFDM and Fuzzy modes as well. So the name is not the best one anymore. Suggestions for a new name are welcome! Suggestions for a > new name are welcome! Tough decision! You could always borrow parts of similar programs' names an add a G prefix :-) Like gMix or gScope or something. But there should be a better option. One query about MFSK16/8 mode: when idling it still sends a lot of tones. IZ8BLY's Stream sends a lot of pure carrier with occasional tones. The pure carrier while idle or at the start of a transmission makes it a lot easier for the RX station to tune.
