Hi Darrell, I believe what you're referring to is low-level transverter in/out jacks. The answer is no; these could not be accomodated by the 9-pin D connector used on the KIO2. If we do a transverter I/O option, it will include jacks for the "XVTR in/out" holes on the top cover. Note that there is extensive support for transverter band display and power control in the next revision of the K2 firmware. Details to follow later. 73, Wayne +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 22:03:53 -0700 From: "Ron D' Eau Claire" Subject: RE: [Elecraft] New Elecraft product: KIO2 Aux I/O Adapter w/RS-232 interface AHA...at the bottom of the announcement it says: "Note: The KIO2 circuitry is also included as part of the upcoming KPA100 high power upgrade for the K2. I'll try to answer these questions here, with a mini-FAQ (see below). Please let me know if there's anything I didn't cover. 73, Wayne * * * Q: Will the PA have a serial port for computer control? A: Yes, an RS-232 port will be included as an integral part of the PA. It will be physically part of the PA's PC board. Q: Since the PA will include RS-232 capabiliy, why would I want to buy the KIO2? A: There are at least four possible reasons: 1. You don't plan to buy the PA. 2. You want to take advantage of the K2's "dual-use" philosophy: i.e., you can swap back in the original top cover (with KBT2, KAT2, and KIO2 options) at any time to use the K2 as a fully-integrated, low-power portable station. It takes about one minute to do this swap, assuming you don't lose any of the six screws ;) 3. You plan to buy the PA eventually, but can't wait to get started with computer control. (Yes, we're showing a demo unit at Dayton, but no, we can't put a shipping date on the PA yet. We won't ship it until we're confident that it works as advertised, is easy to build, and has been fully tested for compliance with all regulations. It will also be extensively field-tested. A piece of equipment that consumes up to 20 amps and produces up to 200 Vpp into 50 ohms, AND is to be built as a kit, requires unwavering attention to safety issues!) 4. You want to control an *external* PA (of any kind, be it homebrew, commercial, or from a kit company), leaving the K2's original top cover in place. The KIO2 makes this a lot easier because the necessary control signals are routed to a single connector. This includes an auxBus signal, which could be used to control Elecraft external equipment. You can connect both a computer and an external PA or other accessories to the KIO2's 9-pin "D" connector. Q: If I buy the KIO2, then later buy the PA, would I get a credit for having purchased the KIO2? A: No. We consider the K2 a dual-use transceiver, and the KIO2 is a part of the low-power configuration. This is entirely separate from the high-power configuration. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 12:19:52 -0700 From: Wayne Burdick Subject: [Elecraft] Re: AuxBus documentation "James E. Fuller" wrote: > Is there any public documentation on the auxbus? > Will there be? Hi Jim, The way the auxBus works is described in the K2 manual. There are a lot of subtleties to actually writing code to use this signal, however, and we don't want to end up in a situation where there are incompatible third-party products out there. So the source code will not be released. Also, the auxBus can only handle so many loads, and we plan to occupy them all, eventually. That said, we are planning to provide an auxBus decoder IC at some point. This would probably come in two flavors: (1) just the chip, which would provide a number of decoded outputs, including one for each band, etc.; (2) a product called the "AuxBox," which would include relays and BNC connectors so it could be used for automatic switching of transverters, filters, external amps, etc. These products are still in the concept phase. 73, Wayne +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 22:07:08 -0700 From: "Wayne Burdick" Subject: [Elecraft] AFRTS / USB broadcasts loud and clear in California... > I took a look. Phil, Your SWL portable may be AM-only, but your K2 isn't :) I just discovered that two of the AFRTS stations are loud and clear here (9 PM PST): Puerto Rico (6485.50) and Pearl Harbor (10320.00). Both are equally strong here and quite good copy. The program is entertaining, too--everything from NPR to Paul Harvey, and well documented on the NPR web site. [Thanks for the tip, Mike!] By the way, I'm using Rev 2.00 of the K2 firmware, which is presently in field test. One of the nice things about this new version is that the VFO is dead on across the entire tuning range of the K2. (The current firmware's VFO readout is a bit less accurate above and below the per-band calibration point.) So, when I dialed in the AFRTS stations mentioned above, the VFO was right on the money, even though both stations are well outside the ham bands. The improved accuracy is due to a new CAL PLL algorithm that we were able to add because the new micro (18C452) has more RAM and ROM. CAL PLL now only has to be run *once* (on 40 meters) to linearize all nine bands. And if your 4 MHz oscillator is calibrated within a couple of Hz, your K2 will read accurately everywhere, +/- about 10 Hz. More details on the Rev 2 firmware will be out in a couple of weeks. This is the version that will be shipped free of charge with the KIO2 option. 73, Wayne N6KR ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Sun, 03 Jun 2001 09:55:19 -0500 From: Tom Hammond =?iso-8859-1?Q?N=D8SS?= Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KIO2 communication protocol Paul: The basic command is from the Kenwood TS-570, augmented with some K2-specific commands as well. 73 - Tom Hammond N0SS FT for the KIO2 At 04:54 AM 6/3/01, you wrote: >Is a preliminary of the KIO2 communication protocol available ? There has been a lot of confusion over how to apply this standard over the years since is specified 2 different configurations for which pin does what. This was based on the fact that there are two types of computing equipment (according to the specification). The original IBM PC did have a 25 pin connector but later switched to a 9 pin connector to save space. The important fact to remember is that with today's equipment only 3 wires are necessary for RS-232 communication, Tx, Rx and Signal Ground. All the others can be ignored and things will work. I do not know how the KIO2 is set up or if a PC will run without additional signals or special drivers. The fact is that if the PC does need extra signals they can be faked from signals on the PC's connector. When we first started developing the serial I/O firmware we were supporting 9600 baud as well, but testing showed that this really wasn't a factor in operating the rig. I have only just completed the K102 and wonder if >there are any known issues with the CW msg recording feature? K2s which have the older firmware versions, those prior to v2.0x, DO exhibit some 'timing related' problems when it comes to LOADing messages into the memory. They're certainly NOT NEARLY as smooth as the LogicKey or CMOS II/III keyers. This having been said, there IS a 'trick' which should assist you in doing a much more creditable job of loading your K2 CW memories. The 'trick' is to: 1) Slow the keyer speed down to about 15-17 WPM (or to at least 5 WPM SLOWER than you can normally send comfortably, whichever is the greater). 2) When you load a message into the K2 memory, stay a bit AHEAD of the timing. Not to the point that you run characters/words together, but start successive characters during the S2nd BAUD, rather than during the 3rd baud. And start the next word AFTER the 3rd baud, but before the 7th baud begins. 3) NOTE that early versions of the K2 firmware contained a bug which would force a DOUBLE-WORD space between words if you paused between words. This bug was fixed in latter versions of the firmware. The most important steps are steps 1 & 2 however. If you LOAD at a slower speed and stay just a bit 'ahead' of the timing WHIE LOADING, I think you will find that messages will play much more smoothly. NOW... Version 2.0x of the firmware (just recently released to K2 owners) fixes virtually all of the timing problems associated with message loading. Actually, v2.0x fixes a number of other small glitches AND it ADDS a BUNCH of new features to the K2 as well... nonetheleast of which is a SIGNIFICANTLY improved CAL PLL procedure which required it's running on ONLY ONE BAND (40M) and which provides significantly imporved tuning accuracy across all bands (assuming you have done a creditable job of aligning C22 beforehand). With v2.0x of the K2 firmware, the keyer is much more well-behaved. It's still not (quite) a CMOS III/Logikey, but it's getting much closer. Hope this helps a bit. 73 - Tom Hammond N0SS ++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Sun, 29 Jul 2001 12:50:19 -0400 From: "Jim Polewczak" Subject: [Elecraft] KIO2 and Windows CE Hi all: Just completed the KIO2 this weekend. The HPC is about 10 X 5 X 1 inches and it's small size compliments the K2 nicely. I first tried the built in Terminal program, and that's OK, but limited to just entering commands from the keyboard (very similar to Hyperterm). I regularly use a program called Power Term. You can set up to 50 "Power Pad" buttons, which are macro keys, and it worked well storing the command strings. This is not one of those "Pocket PC" computers which are popular today. I don't know anything about their capabilities, but if they have a serial port, I bet they could be made to work also. Just keep in mind the possible need for a null modem. For those wondering what a null modem is, its a connector which essentially flips the pin 2 and 3 connection. You can get one at radio shack for probably less then $10, or any computer store for that matter. Like you, I still find them indispensable. I have 5 on my current desktop machine. Two of them are USB to rs232 "converters" made by Belkin. They work fine, but I've seen lower priced models by Xircom recently. You wouldn't want to drag one of them along to plug into a laptop that SHOULD have a real serial port, though, in my opinion. 73 - George - W3ANX K2 at 518 ++++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 19:57:04 -0700 From: Phil Wheeler Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Laptop Computers re Rig Control, etc. "Bob Lewis (AA4PB)" wrote: > > > does anyone know of a way to add a > > serial port to such a computer > > You have a couple of options. I abhor dongles, and I always use the serial port for GPS, RigBlaster, K2, etc. I can use the $400 saved to upgrade my desktop (which is 233 MHz, 8.4 GB HDD). The more expensive laptop is also larger and heavier .. which I really do not need. Automating the process to ensure that you are on the frequency of interest with the antenna you want, stripping decimal point bits and so on would involve processing not possible with HyperTerminal; there isn't a single command which would do the trick. 73, Steve GU3MBS +++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2001 09:48:39 -0700 From: Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] re: KIO2 Questions Hi Bill, K2Remote allows full digital control of the K2 via RS232 and via IP. K2Remote itself does not include IP audio, but I use Microsoft's Netmeeting program (free with Windows) to handle the RX and TX audio. It works great, especially in my wireless 802.11 network at home. This works well for SSB RX/TX and CW RX. For CW TX K2Remote provides keyboard sending. No CW decode yet! :^) I'm finishing it up now and should have a version up on the web site in the next week or so. 73, Eric ++++++++++++++++++++ Date: Mon, 22 Oct 2001 18:25:49 -0400 From: "Anthony A. If you are using aN external phone modem that ties up your only serial port you may have a problem , but it can easily be solved with an internal modem or PCMCIA card. There are also PCMCIA cards with additional serial ports but these tend to be expensive. > Question 3: > > Will it be difficult to use my Bencher paddles after I install this option? > Or will I be able only to TYPE in my CW QSOs? As a matter of fact if you want to do keyboard CW you will need to add an additional program and possibly some additional hardware such as NOMIC, Rig Blaster, multimode control (KAM, MFJ, etc) > Question 4: > > Will I have to remove my printer cable from the back of my computer in order > to use that parallel port? The KIO2 or most other multi-mode adapters (as listed above) usually use the serial port or the sound card ports of your computer most do not use or interfere with the parallel port so your printer can remain connected > > > Any help you can give me would be appreciated. That's not the case at all. It's simply an option to allow additional control using the computer. Just because it's installed, doesn't mean that you *must* use it. > Question 2: > > If my laptop computer has only one Serial Port (which is the case here with > my Toshiba Model 4015CDT), can I use the DX Cluster spotting system to > control my DX4WIN program; or do I need TWO serial ports on my computer? > No idea, since I have never used DX4WIN. :-) However, the KIO2 does require several serial port lines, so presumably if DX4WIN is used to communicate with another radio, you'll need a second port. If your computer has a USB port, you can use a USB to Serial converter. > Question 3: > > Will it be difficult to use my Bencher paddles after I install this option? > Or will I be able only to TYPE in my CW QSOs? Several people have asked me how I managed to get audio through the KIO2 cable connection from the K2 to thelaptop. The truth is that I didn't. But I thought I did! The laptop has a small mic on the keyboard which is "on" when there is no plug in the remote input. Of course, the mic can be turned off with the software but then I would have to turn it back on again when running PSK. In any event, the laptop copied quite a few QSOs while "listening" to the stock K2 speaker. The K2 and laptop were about a foot apart. I am really surprised. Volume wasn't all that high. So it seems that to receive PSK all you need to do is go "near" a radio with your laptop! Sorry for misleading everyone. 73, Bob WB2DHK in Hoboken, NJ +++++++++++++++++ Reply-To: "bob baxter" From: "bob baxter" To: Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KB7OEX: problem with KIO2 Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2002 22:18:47 -0700 Tim, Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Systems, click on Device Manager tab, click on Ports, double click on the port you are using, click on Resources and check the conflicting device panel at the bottom of the page. You might have something, like a modem, using the irq in that port. Good luck. Bob Baxter AA7EQ Bisbee, Az.
