In addition to the obvious (making sure that you have the antenna connected to the right jack on the back), try the suggestions in the Troubleshooting section of the KAT100 manual. By using the L and C relay test menu entries, you can locate a failing relay or an inductor or capacitor that is not soldered properly, etc. Most of the difficulties like you're reporting turn out to be a poorly-stripped toroid lead, although a bad capacitor or relay or even a bad shift register IC is a possibility. The relay tests in the menu should help a lot. 73, Wayne N6KR David Schornak wrote: > > I have both the kat100 and the kat and the problem is that the qrp will tune my antenna up on all the bands however the kat100 will not it will only tune it up on 80m best match i can get with the qrp tuner on 14060 is a 1.2 to 1 > the kat100 best match is 5 to 1 the only difference is which tuner I am using > any ideas? ++++++++++++++ From: "kce" To: "Smith" , Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KAT100 can't remember 160 meter settings Date: Sun, 8 Dec 2002 13:52:06 -0500 I have verified that it is indeed the antenna here and not the kat100, I get the same results with a manual tuner, first tuned the antenna behaves for a bid but constant use for extended period of time the Z of the antenna does indeed change, especially with weather temp changes, humidity and wind. What is tuned to 1-1 this afternoon tomorrow morning will most likely be 5-1. ken w8ob ----- Original Message ----- From: "Smith" To: Sent: Sunday, December 08, 2002 12:24 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KAT100 can't remember 160 meter settings > I'm using a G5RV, which seems stable enough once tuned. This will affect the peak SWR readings much more in SSB mode than in CW mode. It's purely an aesthetic issue--the SWR is no doubt actually close to 1:1 as indicated in TUNE mode. We recently updated the KAT100 firmware to revision 1.04, making several minor changes. One of them was to corrent the tendency for SSB signals to show SWR higher than reality on voice peaks. This is likely to fix your 17 m problem, despite the possibility of higher RF on the cable on this band. We now do more averaging. In addition, Rev. 1.04 lets you install KAT100 jumpers W1 and W2 to override the K2's normal dot/bar LED modes (as set by the GRPH MENU entry). W1 forces DOT mode and W2 forces BAR mode. It also fixes a problem on 160 meters. With revision 1.03, the inductance value for antenna 1, on 160 meters, is lost when you turn off the K2, requiring a re-tune. I'll make sure we've added a KAT100 firmware upgrade to our order page. 73, Wayne Joe Squarzini wrote: > > My setup is the following: fully loaded K2 #2731 with KPA100 and KAT100 > both installed in EC-2 enclosure. I was pleased to see that whatever stray RF that might have been floating around did not seem to cause the LED segments to go wild like they did before installing the new firmware. If the 1.04 chip will remember the 160 meter settings, I believe I will be well pleased with it. Roy Morris KAT100-1, K2/100 #2225 +++++++++++++++++++
